Forums - Gaming - NGP dead...3DS gimmicky...what should we play? Smartphones???

There will always be people who want more "traditional" games. There are many fantastic franchises for Nintendo's and Sony's handhelds and those just won't be available on cell phones. (Except on the "PSP-phone")

Of course there are a lot good apps for cheap or free, but you can't compare those games to calibers like Mario, Zelda, Little Big Planet Portable and the like.

I for one don't like playing on my cell phone/smart phone, because I don't have the necessary data option in my contract. I already pay 70$ for my normal internet and don't want to pay an additional 55$ just for another data plan on my cell phone.

...I'm just waaay ahead of you guys..

Oh yeah?

And what sorts of games do you play then?

That's my issue. Not enough quality and most games are either dodgy, pointless, boring or short

There are exceptions (Mirror's Edge is fun, Angry Birds of course), but there's no 'big' games like Monster Hunter or Zelda to my knowledge, or real system-sellers.

And that's the thing which is holding back smartphones IMO

It doesn't seam like things are holding back smartphones at all. People like touch screen it seams. It must be an familiarity thing. I have access to iDevices and installed some free emulators on one and got to try Duck Tales for old time's sake. But those virtual buttons kill these games for me.

The thing is that I don't really care about interface, or what game I play when I'm on the go... Just want to be entertained for a short period of time and get my mind off other things.don't care if its solitare or Mario or Uncharted...

The fact I have 1 device which does this is a lot more appealing than having to deal with 2 or 3 different ones which may offer a better interface, or a specific game.

So are you considering buying the PSP Phone to further increase this versatility?

I meant gaming on smartphones, we can't have lengthy 50 hour behemoths when the tech isn't there just yet

Short games are fine, but after a while I want to play a game I can play for hours on end with a deep story

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

No, not for 500 bucks anyway...My contract isn't up for another 2.5 years and touch screen games I like to play work wonderfully on a touch screen. Don't see value in spending so much money for a phone with a dpad yet.

I mostly play rpgs like  final fantasy 1 and 2,  crimson gem saga, secret of mana, chaos rings, some smaller krpg like inotia 3, wild frontier, queens crown, zenonia..  which work welll on a touch screen.. it has made me spend more time then any console rpg.. there are some real gems like Real Racing 2 (spend 8 hours singleplayer and already 20 on multiplayer) , NBA jam, NOVA 2, Dead Space, Galaxy on Fire 2, Space Invaders Infinity gene. Plants vs Zombies.. but I think the problem is that the gaming community isn't taking it serious (they don't own a smartphone and are narrow minded) and the lack of advertisments.. it's too hard for them to find a site like Toucharcade and then to find out that Dead Space is a really good game not found on the DS or PSP (even Wii).. or that NBA Jam had a release on it... or that Real Racing 2 has incredible graphics and multiplayer mode which surpasses that of a psp and ds.. I'm just glad that developers are spending more and more on smartphone games.. Gameloft has just licensed the Unreal engine for 4 games.. Capcom is making more and more games for it (well to be fair Devil May Cry 4 is a bit crappy but better then Dead Rising).. Sega announced yesterday Sega All Star Racing.. Square is releasing FF3 (port of DS version) and a port of Final Fantasy Tactics (PSP version) etc etc..

If people would take time to do some research and open up to the idea of a smartphone game they could have a lot of fun... but hey.. it's not my loss..

I don't know about "real" games, but as we can see below, there are lots of games that are long (the RPG's), but the gaming segment is the largest by far on apps purchased on the appstore (or maybe by revenue, I don't know), so games are being sold in there with the buckets.

I understand :).

If 3d gaming is the future, and its is truly not feasible to have touch screen and 3d on the same screen. Then Nintendo wins because of the 3ds's dual screen form factor.

3D gaming on a 3.5 inch screen is not the future, no matter what anyone on this forum tells you...lol

Off topic...does anyone know if 3DS shows full 800x240 resolution in 2D for games? Or does it show 800x240 interlaced in 2D?

If its interlaced, I'll be quite dissapointed... thats less pixels than the PSP1 screen for christs sake, and that gives me an eyesore these days.
