There's no tradeoff, rather people are just playing more. The answer to your question is simple: Because the 3DS has Nintendo games. Sony's PlayStation Suite has the potential to harm NGP sales, because if you don't need an NGP to play the games of that service, then that's one incentive less to buy an NGP. That's no worse of an assumption as saying that lots of DS owners would be perfectly satisfied with iOS/Android games.
