True, but if advertised correctly, I don't see why can't it replicate the success of the DS. It's almsot the same, just better.

As for NGP, the device is reportedly easier to develop for and will have a certain "playstation suite" going for it, multi platform intergration could help. Also, while the DS didn't thrive on strong graphics to get its sales done, the PSP did. NGP games look brilliant - it could be a factor for purchase.

Lastly, about smarthphones, I'm only talking logic. Lots of DS owners would be perfectly satisified with simple iOS/Android games. Why should they get a portable gaming system?

The SNES was almost the same as the NES, just better. I think you agree with that line of thought. So much for that, on to the next paragraph.

Yes, those are the things that make the existing fanbase happy.

Nintendo is running surveys all the time and the results usually show that those who started to play smartphone games kept playing the DS as much as before and also bought as many games as before. There's no tradeoff, rather people are just playing more. The answer to your question is simple: Because the 3DS has Nintendo games. Sony's PlayStation Suite has the potential to harm NGP sales, because if you don't need an NGP to play the games of that service, then that's one incentive less to buy an NGP. That's no worse of an assumption as saying that lots of DS owners would be perfectly satisfied with iOS/Android games.

That's from what experience I have with smarthphone owners, which was almost everyone at my old job (major cellphone company).
