Won't happen, DS will far surpass 140 mill, probably hit 160 at the minimum.

@rol: Disagree. Smartphone gaming is on a sharp advent and Sony actually did some good stuff with the NGP so far. Nintendo being weaker than before, when releasing DS, is something I don't see at all.

It could depending on 3ds's life

3ds can do 12 million its first year to match 04 05

06 is 20 million that doesn't seem far fetched

07,08,09 all sold 30 million a year. 

21 million 2010 and probably 15 million this year.

If the 3ds can have the years like this

2011:15

20-25 million in 2012

13,14,15: 25 million at least 

and 20-25 million for 2016

 If it does that than it has a chance to be on par or not to far behind, So outselling the ds won't be to hard if they pull off the same numbers but stay out longer.  Also the numbers are trying to follow ds's pattern not 3ds's future or will do

There's no data that shows smartphone gaming cutting into the software sales of dedicated handheld gaming machines and the good stuff Sony has done with the NGP appears more or less restricted to things that their fanbase can get excited about.

Nintendo seems to be a little bit obsessed with 3D. If you remember, technology and three dimensional gameplay were not among the reasons why the DS was so successful.

True, but if advertised correctly, I don't see why can't it replicate the success of the DS. It's almsot the same, just better.

As for NGP, the device is reportedly easier to develop for and will have a certain "playstation suite" going for it, multi platform intergration could help. Also, while the DS didn't thrive on strong graphics to get its sales done, the PSP did. NGP games look brilliant - it could be a factor for purchase.

Lastly, about smarthphones, I'm only talking logic. Lots of DS owners would be perfectly satisified with simple iOS/Android games. Why should they get a portable gaming system?
