Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata on 3DS Mario and Sales Targets CEO says aim is for greater success than DS and Mario that makes use of system's capabilities. Posted Mar 01, 2011 at 15:23, By Anoop Gantayat

Nintendo is aiming for sales of the 3DS to top those of the DS, CEO Satoru Iwata said to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper in an interview that was posted at Asahi.com today.

Saying that the DS, which has sold over 140 million units worldwide, has been used by over 300 million people, Iwata also told the paper, "We'd like to increase this even further with the 3DS."

Regarding software, which the paper noted will be the key in expanding the system's userbase, Iwata provided what appears to be some hints at the first 3DS Mario game. Nintendo is experimenting with gameplay where Mario will run into the screen and strike blocks that are floating in the air. "We're making software that is packed with the kinds of surprises and enjoyment that the 3DS can deliver."

Iwata also touched upon the competition. Regarding Sony's NGP platform, he said the need to pay monthly 3G usage fees would alone decrease the customer base. Regarding the success developers have had with Apple's iOS platform, Iwata said, "We're at a period where it will be difficult to keep the value of our content if we are unable to offer experiences that can't be had on Smartphones.

This is the time that SONY make the revolution in the industry not Nintendo. I dont see this coming and even if i believe that 3DS will outsell PSP 2 it will not be a dinstict difference between the 2 handhelds. Nevertheless this is just my personal  opinion.

*i have never consider of buying a handheld but PSP2 took my attention.

Rather than copy the capacitive screen, they continue with their stuff. Although you have to give Sony's backward trackpad a round of applause if it's used to its advantage.

I just wonder if the NGP will be filled with mobile software.

It shouldn't be difficult for Nintendo to improve on New Super Mario Land DS. With graphics being about equal, this could be the first time ever that a handheld 2D Mario is more than just a washed out, portable port of the console version. I'd rather hear that they are going to take the multilplayer to a new level than any 3D stuff. Regardless, it would be near impossible for it to be worse than NSML DS.

Mario Kart 3DS on the other hand has a much harder act to follow.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Guess he missed the annoucment about multiple NGP SKUs.

As for 3DS outselling DS we will see but still i don't see any space for mobile gaming to grow when everyone has gaming device in his pocket already.

Well I wouldn’t say he is mad about wanting it too sell more than the DS. If they have the right software it could be done but it won’t be as easy for them as it was with the DS. There was almost no competition for it.

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

It still is.

The DS is the only handheld to play in dual screen and the 3DS still holds true, and adding 3D.

True that you don't usually need 2 screens but there are still a lot of games that make it much more appealing by taking advantage of dual screens, which cannot be done on another platform.

I think it is possibly really, but right now I say this product will get over 100 million. Just like I would say NGP will get 40 million plus.

It is certainly possible to top DS, It just depends on wether Nintendo can attract the expanded audience  in the numbers they managed on DS. As it should do, it all comes down to software.

It is possible the 3ds has a lot of potential, multiple million seller (And by million sellers I mean 5 mill plus  ), nintendogs, mario, mario kart, zelda, Miis games, party games, pokemon, animal crossing and then, the rest of the ips (Not as big as the previous ones but still), metroid, kirby, pilotwings, kid Ikarus, fzero, star fox, pikmin, phantasy life, FE... On top of that we should add resident, MGS, Dragon quest, FF (V and VI remakes a least), layton and many more... Reaching the same numbers of the DS wil be hard but not impossible...
