Forums - Gaming - Favourite Genre.. Take two.

Me being dipshit and not being able to figure out how to add more poll options and somehow managing to leave out one of my favourite genres, I've decided to remake the thread.. This time without the poll to let people just state which is their favourite genre and why.

Mine has to be the strategy genre, recently I trawled through the PC database and found most of the strategy games that I have owned on PC/360 and found about 34 so far.I love/d that genre very much and think that it's the only genre that has remained mainly constant for me, with very few let downs in term of content, considering I liked almost every strategy game I've played. Unfortunately as my PC is relatively crap I can't experience the newer ones like Starcraft II and Civ 5 but as they say "old is gold" my favourite had to be Cossacks, man I loved that game x)

Also.. R.I.P Ensemble, I liked Age of Empires berry much.

So, what is your favourite genre and why?

Action-adventure, by faaaaar.

Let's try this again! You also left out Action-Adventure last time (I guess they could go under just "Action", but there's still key differences between the two! ), but I won't hold it against you.

Here's my favorite of favorites (with current gen examples that I love!)

Platformer

  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns
  • Kirby's Epic Yarn
  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  • Sonic Colors

Action-Adventure

  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
  • Okami
  • Epic Mickey
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
  • Bioshock
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum

The Action genre has also been pretty good to me this generation, but mostly thanks to the Castlevania series haha.

Yeah I agree with the action adventure, mainly the ones that I have played have not disappointed me either, I really, REALLY liked Bioshock, one of my favourite games by far.

Ashamed to say I haven't really played that many platformers lol, I am probably one of the only people that had a PC and played games like Age of Empires and the first Warcrafts etc instead of playing Mario and Zelda. I have NEVER played Zelda, Mario or Final Fantasies(Despite having a 100 games collection on PS1!). I did however enjoy late 90s and early 2000s games on PC.

Well I can't really blame you. PC gaming during the late 90's/early 00's was superb.

I mean, I started with a Sega Genesis/MegaDrive so Sonic was all I knew (which is totally okay with me, those games were incredible). Been a platform junkie every since.

I'm with Smeags, Action-Adventure and Platformer, as well as RPG for me!

Probably 60 games in total in those genres alone this gen!

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I did have a Megadrive too, had Sonic adventure, I remember the days when you can't save your progress and had to leave your sega on or lose it all. But I don't think I had that many games for Sega as most of the games were rarely imported into my country of residence at the time. I think I also had Dune and Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles :L.But yeah looking back now, it's a bit interesting how drastically technology has evolved into what it is today. Taking into account that I can still remember the time when I couldn't save the games!

RPG!!!!!!

best ones this gen for me:

-1- dragon age:origins

-2- mass effect

-3- oblivion.

until know only rpgs i played :P

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

According to the number of games I own it should be FPS but in terms of preference it's definately RPGs. The amount of time I've devoted to the genre far outweighs any other.

Having said that I'm a bit of an oddball because I really prefer genre mixes:

Mass Effect, Deus Ex, Fallout 3: Shooter/RPG hybrids

Uncharted 2: Platform/action adventure

so I suppose the key for me is more variety rather than sticking to any genre conventions.

Hrm... I'm mostly a classic-JRPG fan. I like the values of old- lots of gameplay, story may be weak, but the game keeps going. I hate having to go through several FMVs in a game; I'd rather they be removed and make room for more game. I feel that these games give me the most value for my purchase.

However, there are several other genres I like to play. Some turn-based strategy (ala Fire Emblem) are great, some puzzle games (Tetris, Droplitz) are dangerously addictive, some old-school adventure or action/adventure (Zelda 1, Startropics) games are also quite enjoyable, and even the occasional platformer keep me playing. But I usually gravitate back to my RPGs...
