At least watch good movies.
Books still rock though.

Honestly I have respect for people who read books.
Like many in the thread have said (I would guess, I only saw Seece say that though lol), I too lack the patience.

It's never too late to get back in the game Slimy. Reading's like riding a bicycle. You never forget how after you learn. (sex is like that too)

I don't really read fiction I'm afraid, as far as fiction goes I'm mostly Discworld oriented.
I like books about science and nature though, I think I like to learn when I read, it's a big part of my enjoyment. At the moment I'm reading a book called "Quantum theory cannot hurt you", it's not the best book I've ever read if I'm being honest, but it's a nice introduction I suppose.
I'm also reading the Qu'ran, mostly out of interest and partly to get rid of some of my ignorance about Islam. But I've broken it down into smaller portions. I'm not reading it all at once, I'm reading chapters inbetween other books.

Wow you must be the master of analogies. Books, bicycles and sex.

Wouldn't Quantum Physics for Dummies or Explaining "Quantum Physiscs for Dummies" be a more appropriate introduction into the field?
Anyways, you can learn something from fiction too. It's just not gonna be something explicit. You're gonna have to interpret the text on a superior level, rather than just taking the actions that go on in the book at face value. I think that every (good) fiction author tries to communicate something to the reader, something that's more than just the sum of all the words that make up the text, and more than the actions that make up the narrative.
I also don't get why someone who's not religious would want to read a religious text? What would be the point?

Hehe, haven't you ever had sex on a bicycle while reading the Kama Sutra?

Just finished the 2nd book (The Great Hunt), and have gotten a decent start on the 3rd book (The Dragon Reborn) in the last couple of days. Something about the balance between everything in this series just makes me absolutely adore it. The magic is absolutely fascinating, the relationships are marvelous (although I think they do get much better later on in the series), and other than the occasional wishing the series wasn't quite so long, I really do think its a masterpiece. I sincerely hope that the 12th, 13th, and 14th books (which are written/to be written by Brandon Sanderson due to Robert Jordan's death), aren't too significant of a change in the series, as it really would be a let down to have the end of the series be so much different. After I finish up on the currently written portion of this series, I'm intending on reading: A Song of Ice and Fire The Saga of Recluce Harry Potter 1-7 (re-reading 1-6, have not yet read #7) Along with a lot of others, but I seem to go on spurs where I will read 25-50 pages per day (such as now) and then times where I will go a couple months without reading...I'm hoping I can keep on my current pace because I have soooooo many books I want to read :) |
almost everything plotwise was already laid out by robert jordan prior to his death. sanderson just has to put it all together. ive read the two in the series that are out by him already and he is not an untalented writer.

Yea, I know the plot was laid out (Thank the lord), I just haven't read any of Sanderson's text, and am worried about the change in writing styles...although if I recall correctly, Jordan's wife along with other people involved in the prior texts are still involved, so that should minimize the effect of a different writing style.
