Would also recommend:

The Painted Man, followed by Desert Spear

Bartimaeus Trilogy,

Simon Scarrow's Roman books.

Mark Robson's books. - Imperial trilogy and also the series beginning with the "Forging of the sword".

And Belgariad series, first book being Pawn of the Prophecy.

I like fiction :p

I've read the Bartimaeus Trilogy (very good), but can you tell me if any of those books  are similar to The Way of Shadows? I've had a bit urge to read books based around a young child that grows up and becomes a badass. Do any of the books you've listed fall under that description? I'd rather not fall back on my backlog of horror novels and autobiographies if I can find a good life spanning epic to read.

I would seriously recommend Painted Man, it's alot like Way of Shadows in many perspectives, I even found it better in parts! If possible, it's got even more soft-eye-porn in it than the Way of Shadows. I liked the story more, the only bad thing right now is waiting for the 3rd book to come out, which is in like 2012 >:

read all the dexter novels recently...i didnt enjoy them as much as the show but they are pretty good (except for Dexter in the Dark...its a bit odd ...and not in a good way)

its not much at all like the show at all, so if you like dexter i would recommend them.

Try the Tales of the Otori by Lian Hearn, it seems right up your ally TBH spans a large chunk of a mans life from a boy and has ninjas in it.

Just to add, just in case anyone wondered (stealth bump), my favourite author is Frank McCourt and my two favourite books are Teacher Man and Angela's Ashes.

He is the greatest author in recent history and he his now dead. One my dreams was to meet him in person one day, but he recently died and now I've shifted my focus to meeting his brother (who is at least a decent author).

Angela's ashes is a great book

Hm... the last book I read, or let's better say short story, was Rashomon (Akutagawa Ryunosuke).

It's quite interesting and not too difficult, too. Recommended for advanced learners of Japanese!

Does it have any connection with the Akira Kurosawa movie?

Yes. According to wikipedia, the movie is based on 2 stories, namely "Rashomon" and "In a grove".

I'm currently reading World Without End. Getting ready for the miniseries!

I've read that. More like a book without end 1000 pages of tiny text with toiletpaper thin pages, unbelieveable. Was enjoyable read though!

Not sure what is the title in English....But I guess something in the line of 'A workweek of 4 hours'..From Timothy Ferriss...  I never read a book like that thought it would be garbage... Well it is garbage but it lets you think and gives you energy;..

And I am also reading Michael Crichton's Congo..  I always liked his books (like Jurrassic park and the Lost World) sadly they can feel a bit outdated...

Just got my box set of Scott Pilgrim graphics novels and am just over half way through the first. I love it so far!

In my back catalogue I have a book about a love story in Iran and a book about the history of the alphabet.
