They did not "fumble the ball." It is the natural console lifecycle. The only reason Sony and MS are not seeing identical declines is because of the slim models and Kinect extending their lives.
There is a thing called oversaturation. If you obtain super fast record amounts of sales, eventually you will fall as quick as you rose. Eventually you will reach a limit in how many people want your console. It just happens. Sony and MS will soon reach that point as well if they haven't already. It's just that the rises have been less drastic for them, so the declines will be as well. The higher you reach, the farther you have to fall, it's just that simple.
The fact that you are even comparing drop in Wii sales during February of its FIFTH year to the mistakes made between SNES and N64 transition is laughable..

Like i said to begin with its irrelevant for this gen but i could see them losing market share next gen like n64 did compared to snes.
I admit im very pessimistic when it comes to Nintendo, maybe it has something to do with living in the UK. Nintendo have never been very popular here, heck the Master System out sold the NES here.
Most gamers I know love Bayonetta yet don't know Madworld exists, the vibe surrounding Nintendo seems to be at an all time low.
I understand what your saying about over saturation and your right but I don't recall the ps1 or ps2 being outsold by the competition 5 years into their gen, They still sold well even when the next generation began as did the snes and nes. I think its quite a big deal that the Wii is selling less than 360/ps3 and an even bigger deal that kinect looks like being a big success eliminating the Wiis main selling point, its unique motion controls.
Unless Nintendo comes out with something completely new again and creates another blue ocean for themselves they'll be fighting for market share against two bigger companies and will probably come off worse.
