Did China Try To Pass Off Top Gun As Air Force Footage?

A few days ago, China Central Television showed footage of what they claimed was an air force training exercise conducted on January 23. From the looks of things, they were actually just playing clips from Top Gun.

The clips in question were reportedly aired during the News Broadcast program on China Central Television, the major state television broadcast company. They supposedly showed a J-10 fighter firing a missile at another aircraft during a practice exercise.

But an internet commenter quickly pointed out that the aircraft the J-10 was shown shooting down was an F-5, an American aircraft, and the very one Tom Cruise guns down in a scene from Top Gun. Comparing frames from the CCTV broadcast (left) and Top Gun (right), well, they're lookin' pretty much identical.

So that's amusing. There's no word yet on whether or not the Chinese fighter pilots engaged in any beach volleyball after the exercises. [MiniTofu via Geekosystem]

Holy fuck, dudes. What's next? Independence Day?

China is hilarious, as always. So hilarious that I'm afraid to ever set foot there.

I wonder how many of the Chinese public has actually seen the Top Gun to even realize that the clips were fake :L

I know. I hate those kinds of movies. The kind of shit that came out during the last few years of Cold War is abysmal. I can't believe the amount of American propaganda carries through the movies, James Bond in particular, the villain was always, directly or indirectly a fucking communist Russian. If he wasn't Russian his main henchman was in some war or the other a communist.

Yeah, and while it pisses me off most of the time (I'm Russian), I understand that the filmmakers had no good alternative back then. Russian cinematogrophy is far less action based, but it had its share of American critique. Not so much today.

Lol I lived in Russia too, so that's the reason it annoys me too. I also did the Cold War in detail, it's not like Americans were any better. Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea etc. Instigating wars all over the place. And both superpowers undermining each other in their respective wars. Human nature can be so pathetic sometimes. Out of Russian cinematorgrophy all I remember are a ton of Afghanistan related movies and Brother/Brother 2. Epic films.

Yup, Bodrov is missed. Brother and 2 are brillaint mfaia fils, with some of the best music in film generally.
