Forums - Sony - Why the NGP is not also a phone

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-01-27-sony-why-the-ngp-isnt-a-phone

Sony's Next Generation Portable does many things – including 3G – but it is not a phone.

"Deliberately no," Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Andrew House told Eurogamer. "We've avoided it."

Why?

"We think that voice capability carries with it a whole other set of expectations, and we want this to be first and foremost the ultimate gaming experience.

"We've elected not to complicate that proposition overly by trying to have it be all things to all people including voice and a conventional phone. Clearly [PlayStation Suite] addresses an already vibrant phone marketplace that serves that consumer very well."

PlayStation Suite is a new service which will deliver classic PSone content to Android smartphone devices.

Sony boss Kaz Hirai promised PlayStation Suite, which launches later this year, will bring "legendary original PlayStation content" to mobiles. No specific titles were announced, but a snowboarding game was briefly demoed, with a virtual D-pad and buttons clearly displayed on the phone screen.

"We envision PlayStation Suite as an initiative that is essential to the world of portable entertainment," he insisted.

Yesterday Sony's PlayStation Phone – what we now know is called Xperia Play – was suffered another leak with the publication of a detailed hands-on video. Sony is expected to announce it next month.

I think Sony actually hit the mark with what they've done here. They have a dedicated gaming device (with all its bells and whistles) and they allow you to play games on your phone.

That's fine and well, but how come it's not also a washing machine? Explain that, Sony!

They couldn't fit the tech in there with toaster, the coffee maker and all...

The thing is, I feel that a 5" screen is impractical as a phone, and that thing would just be too big to lug around as a phone, especially with the analogue sticks on the side.

If they can come up with a PSP go styled one, then maybe it might work as a phone, but I like their strategy, and I really want both, even if the XPERIA play is nothing more than a playstation certified device

I think NGP will be great and may even see some skype action down the road but that phone is going to tank hard...

Gamers wont care about this phone...they don't mind carrying a PSP or 3DS in their backpack or pocket. So they are basically pitching this brick of a phone to a market which wants to carry 1 sleek do it all device. And their justification for a giant slideout brick is Dpad and PS1 ports. Not going to fly...

It just seems like a prototype that never should have been made.

Hell yeah they could!  It's fucking SONY! It's just not as useful for gaming as the toaster, coffee maker, refrigerator, and the waste disposal are.

Does it have a grill, too? And will it blend?

I don't know about a grill (although that touchscreen on the back could double as one I guess. Hmm...), but it definitely has a blender. That's what you meant, right?

The question is rather, both...

Will it grill?

I mean like this:
