I guess we can expect Wii to still trounce PS3 in the late Nov-early Jan period. Last year the difference was about 200K. So if PS3 builds up a 250-300K lead by November it should finish the year ahead, but not by a massive amount. My vote is PS3, just.

I hope you are right, because that would mean that Nintendo has a great game we don't know about yet ready for the holiday season.

You doubt they'll have a big-ish holiday title waiting in the wings?

Well, a price cut will also be a shot in the arm for Wii sales in Japan, thugh if the Yen difference remains the same (i.e. if PS3 cuts prices too) then it may not do quite as much as if Wii can put a bit more daylight between it's price and PS3 price.

A million multiplatform worldwide, and it sold 880,000 through March 2008.

Clearly the fact that it spawned two sequels shows that it wasn't a bomb.

Eh, no, it was 1m PS3 only.  Back then there wasn't even a 360 version known (or the even later Special PS2 release).  It may have been worldwide though, I'm not sure.  I do remember a Namco Bandai exec joking it should sell 2 million (1 million for Gundam, 1 million for Musou) though.

2 million was some staff member's wishes, which was clarified at the same event that Koei's internal goal was 1 million

"Game Watch, Famitsu.com, ITmedia D Games, Gpara.com, and DengekiOnline.com covered a press event held by Bandai Namco, Koei, and Sony for Gundam Musou. Bigwigs appearing were Bandai Namco Holdings president Takeo Takasu, Koei co-founder ****o Erikawa, and Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi. Erikawa commented that the title represents for Koei the first collaboration with another company in its 29-year history. She went on to say she wanted the game to sell 2 million copies though Bandai Namco's more modest Shin Unozawa says they're looking to have worldwide sales of 1 million, an achievement that would still make Gundam Musou notable even amongst the best-selling Gundam games. As that implies, Kutaragi is quoted in the Dengeki article as saying "Because Gundam is a work that has fans worldwide, I want to release it overseas quickly."

Right, so  you're seriously suggesting that that they either weren't aware of or chose to ignore the Xbox 360 version in their worldwide sales forecast?

Just admit you got called out on your BS. Even Nintendo fans know you're full of it.

Given the Xbox 360 version wasn't even announced at that point, I'd say yes.  It was 1m PS3 only, because at that point Gundam Musou was PS3 only as far as anyone outside Bandai or Koei knew.  It was touted as the first big PS3 exclusive in Japan even, at least after VF5 crashed and burned, and the 360 version wasn't even announced until after the PS3 version had already on shelves in Japan for months.  In fact, the 360 announcement likely was what delayed the western release until that fall (not exactly the speedy localization talked about in your article).

Unless you're seriously suggesting a Bandai rep (it wasn't Koei it seems) was adding in sales for a game that wasn't public yet in their very public projection?  There was also no timeframe given on the figure, meaning we don't know if it would've alinged to their financial calendar (which projections almost always do, especially from Namco Bandai) or if it was a lifetime projection (which is rare, and usually clarified as such, like Iwata's 10m plus figure for NSMB Wii and Wii Fit Plus).  I don't have time now, but later on I'll dig through Namco Bandai's IR docs and see if I can find a better reference.

And a little less with the personal attacks please, I'd hate to see you banned for such behavior.  If you can't get your argument across without resorting to that, you should probably not bother in the first place... all it does is devalue your own position.

Of course you are absolutely right,  my unreserved apologies. I shouldn't post whilst drunk and I feel embarrassed for resorting to personal attacks rather than the argument at hand. I hope you can accept my apology and continue this discussion in a more civilised manner at a later date.

Unfortunately you can't delete the internet (Try telling Sony that), so our misdemeanours remain, but I would hope you can give a bit of good faith that most people aren't always as obnoxious as they may at first seem.

PS3 will be the best selling game console in 2011, 3DS won't be even touching PS3 with the anticipated PS3 pricecut later this year

*laughs maniacally*

I love to see hope.

3DS is already freaking ahead of the PS3 in one freaking day versus two freaking months. The PS3 will be millions behind the 3DS.

Yeah, it's almost laughable.  Lets pull a tres and compare some "big" future titles (but let's be reasonable and say 500k or more sellers :P)...

PlayStation 3

  • Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix)
  • Final Fantasy Versus XIII (Square Enix)
  • Metal Gear Solid Rising (Konami)
  • Ninokuni: The Queen of White Sacred Ash (Level 5) *maybe
  • Tales of Xillia (Namco) *maybe
  • Yakuza: Of the End (Sega)

Nintendo 3DS

  • Animal Crossing (Nintendo)
  • Dragon Quest (Square Enix) *maybe, depending on what it is
  • Fantasy Life (Level 5) *maybe
  • Final Fantasy (Square Enix) *maybe, depending on what it is
  • Inazuma Eleven Go (Level 5)
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising (Nintendo) *maybe
  • Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (Square Enix)
  • Mario Kart (Nintendo)
  • Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D (Konami)
  • Paper Mario (Nintendo)
  • Pilotwings Resort (Nintendo) *maybe
  • Pokemon (Pokemon Co.) *maybe, depending on what it is
  • Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright (Level 5)
  • Resident Evil: Revelations (Capcom) *maybe
  • Super Mario (Nintendo)
  • Super Robot Taisen 3D (Bandai) *maybe, depending on what it is
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (Nintendo) *maybe
  • Time Travelers (Level 5) *maybe

From the sound of best seeling console of 2011 being PS3 you can be wrong in 2 points in shunning him...

3DS isn't a console for some but a handheld and he can be talking about WW... so in both cases he could be right

Did they stop developing Wii games in Japan or something? There are more Wii games coming in March for the U.S. alone then Japan for the next 3 months. Are you sure there aren't MORE GAMES for the Wii in Japan and you just aren't listing them?

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/releases.php?month=3&year=2011&region=Japan&console=Wii&publisher=

Yes they did stop. And no you can't blame them when you look at those last few leftovers sold.

They never really started.  They just kept chipping away at PS3, despite the games like VF5 or Gundam Musou bombing upfront.  3rd parties have pretty much created today's Japanese marketplace on both PS3 and Wii through sheer persistence.

That's quite sad...

Above: still the best game of the year.
