Forums - Sony - PSP2 to Have 3G Support, Arrives This Year

I hope uncharted and killzone don't go to the handhelds, at least not the mainstream ones. A side story is ok. Because if it happens like VC 2 and 3 then f*ck that.

But VC2 is pure ownage on the go ya know :P

anywho doubt any mainstream ones of UC/KZ will come to psp2. BUT I hope we get some GOOD spinoffs. Like Dexter...as I have said before a KZ game from the pov of Helghan or an UC starring a young young drake OR his mentor, Such a game would be great

Oh yeah.  one other benefit of an OLED display.  They generally use a decent bit less power then comparable LCD and LED displays.  Of course, it's still a touchscreen.

Honestly, this news kinda sucks.  I'm thinking bare minimum $349 price tag now, but when you get in that range, might as well just round to the nearest hundred, ie $299 or $399, and it definitely won't be the former.

Why are handhelds this gen so absurdly expensive.  ;_;

If the OLED display is true, then it looks like any second guesses about the PSP2 being 3D compatible are out the window, unless it has a 120Hz refresh rate and they want to make the device compatible with shutter glasses (not sure where they'd be going with that).

It would also make a sub $300 intro price less likely, but admittedly, I have no idea what the current price is for 3-4" OLED displays.

The Sharp parallax barrier display in the 3DS turned out to be only an estimated $20-30 per unit, and the Retina display in the iPhone 4 is under $30, so it seems unlikely that the potential OLED display would be any more than that.

But a 3G enabled device at $299, if they can make it profitable, would be a very enticing purchase. We'll see shortly.

The only way I could see this being near $299 now is if Sony ignores the pricing of similar, non-gaming devices, and focuses solely on the 3DS.  The 3DS will have an easily marketable feature that the PSP2 won't, and the PSP2 will always seem somewhat lacking to the average consumer in that regard.  I think to combat the marketability of Nintendo's 3D screen, they'll have to be priced within $100 of the 3DS.  Hopefully they'll be thinking something similar, for my wallet's sake.

They're not gonna announce price, this thing is gonna be 500 dollars at least.

You know what, a $299 MSRP is still doable, even with a touchscreen OLED display.

The Cowon S9 16GB video player uses an OLED touch screen display and it goes for $239. The 8GB version goes for $199. So clearly the display is not adding much more, if anything, to the manufacturing cost of the unit relative to other such devices.

I'm going to optimistically say $299.

They could go $350, but in doing so, once again they'll make Nintendo's latest offering look like a bargain by comparison.

I don't think touting a bullet list of features as to why it costs so much more would do much to sway consumers either. Offhand, 3G would be the only big feature for anyone not buying it for just the games, and even then, details regarding subscription rates or usage fees need to be spelled out first.

Honestly, this thing shouldn't cost all that much to make.  The iPhone 4, for example, costs under $200, but it sells for $499 by itself, and $199 with a phone contract.

The question is whether they'll price the device like smartphones and .mp3 players, with a hugh mark-up on each one sold, or whether they'll stick with how they've launched consoles in the past, selling it it at or below cost.

After all, the ps3 was far more functional than competing Blu-ray players at the time, yet it sold for far less when it launched ($599 vs $1000 or more).
