And the money that comes with focusing on tech will get in the way profits. Uncharted isn't exactly a top tier franchise, so even though it made money, it's not exactly setting the gaming world on fire as much as reviewers pretend it is.

No, it was merely misinformed. I hadn't checked the sales in a while.

Uncharted still isn't top tier, but is still a higher tier than I thought. I still say it didn't need to cost as much, same as loads of games, although it's not anywhere near as bad as the budgets of other games, especially those that weren't proven properties.

Besides, my point still stands. I did not write that there are no exceptions, so neither Uncharted game is a counter, as I'm addressing games where tech focus got in the way. Companies like Naughty Dog and Insomniac kept their heads about it.



A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Reggie said in the 3DS new york conference that the 3DS is actually worth $300 - $400USD .. but they made the price $249.99USD, $150 less of what its actually worth..

I'm going to call plain, old boasting on that. The mainstream does not consider a game system worth that much.

EDIT: At least a hanheld, when you likely have more than one per household.

Seriously, that does sound more like something SCE would have said back in 2006, although in this case, at least Nintendo is still pulling a profit on each unit sold, even at $250.

And even in the days of elementary school kids with iPods, somehow I just don't see the average family buying a bunch of $300-400 handheld video game players for the kids.

The simple answer is that those are seen as having more uses than games, which means people accept higher prices. And no, slapping on features to gaming devices doesn't change that perception, as we saw with the PS3's price.

He's right. Nintendo regretted both the Wii and the Gamecube price for being too low (and maybe even giving a negative perception of value to consumers). Maybe $50 more in the first year or so would do wonders.
