Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Will 'Regret' $249 Pricing on 3DS, says Pachter

@lordtheknight but the FFs before that usually put some focus on tech and they turn out alright. Uncharted 2 is a game that focuses on tech and is good

Did I write "often", or "all"?

And the money that comes with focusing on tech will get in the way profits. Uncharted isn't exactly a top tier franchise, so even though it made money, it's not exactly setting the gaming world on fire as much as reviewers pretend it is.

I came in to this thread thinking Pachter was going to say the 3DS price was too high.  Boy, was I wrong.

I'm actually sort of agreeing with him on this one, for a change. :P

Well, not really that Nintendo will regret it, but more that they could've charged more and it would still sell out. Ah well.

That hurts man. Now, I am going to cry over at this corner until you come say you're sorry.

The 3D tech in the 3DS is quite unique and not cheap, I'm quite frankly surprised it won't retail for more out of the gate. The Wii is still 250 bucks for chrissake! Price won't be a huge issue.

Note this is not a diss against Naughty Dog. Any developers that actually manages to duplicate the magic of Mario Kart, among all those that have attempted, deserves my respect.

$300 would be a huge gamble.

While it's true that Nintendo could initially sell the handheld at that price and it would still sell out, it's highly probable that sales would stall pretty soon after the launch period, forcing Nintendo to drop the price within the first year of availability. Quick price drops devalue products, because consumers expect further price cuts in the not to distant future. More people holding out obviously results in lower sales.

But most importantly, what Pachter is forgetting about is that every $50 less spent on the hardware itself can potentially go to software and that's where the real money is.

Agree with this.  Patcher is out of his mind.  How will it be better for investors if Nintendo sells this at a higher price, but fewer people buy in the long run?  Not only will more people buying it at a cheaper price probably equal the same revenue HW-wise, but it also means WAY more revenue SW-wise.

Then you have to think about the PSP2 releasing later this year (most likely).  If Nintendo price at $299 or $349, they would probably end up being the exact same price as the PSP2.  This would cause people to really stop and think about which  handheld they will be getting.  Having a lower price, even if it ends up only being a $50 difference, will still help Nintendo.

How ironic, when Rol is serious people won't seem to read.

Edit: lol, just in time.

I realise that is your opinion and respect it, but next time you may want to write it like it is your opinion as opposed to stating it as if it were fact.  Of course, I do think that most of the 4 1/2 million people who bought Uncharted 2 would disagree with you.

Personally,I think the 249$ price tag is PERFECT,as for Pachter...everyone should have stopped listening to him a long long time ago...
