Forums - Nintendo - When will MarioKart Wii hit 30 million?

Do you think MK(mario Kart, not mortal kombat) wii will reach 30 million units sold? I predict by the end of June(with absolutely no research done). When do you predict/guess MK Wii will reach 30 million units sold?

Let's see!

If we just go by the first week of sales in the year, here's the 2009/2010/2011 numbers:

Americas, week ending 9th January

09: 69,652
10:  52,300
11: 64,735

Others:

09: 87,888
10: 60,898
11: 68,263

Japan:

09: 22,093
10: 16,788
11:  21,141

WorldWide:

09: 179,633
10: 130,035
11: 154,140

So, just looking at that, 2011 is right in the middle of 2010 and 2009 in sales.

Here's the sales for those years.

Americas:

09: 3552k
10: 2236k

Others:

09: 3402k
10: 2382k

Japan:

09: 422k
10:  545k

Worldwide:

09: 7376k
10: 5164k

As 2011 is seemingly right in the middle of 2010 and 2009, I'd say 2009's sales are the high-end and 2010 are the low end sales. Mario Kart Wii needs 3970k to reach 30 million. How long did that take in 2009 and 2010?

2009: Sold 4266k by week ending 18th December

2010:  Sold 3952k by week ending 5th September.

So, I'd guess between those two. Late November would be my personal guess.

It depends, though. How much will MK3DS boost MKWii?

Well, it has about 4 million to go. I'm thinking sales will slow down a little bit along with the Wii, but I say right before Christmas rush.

Why would that happen?

I think it will do it just before the end of the year

hmmm its weird but sometimes nintendo( some other company software may do that too, idk )  software boosts their counterparts. I know mario galaxy had a small boost after mario galaxy 2 was released. It might be becuase there is more exposure to the franchise in general, or it might be some people think they are getting the new game ,but they get the old one instead.  Kinda like how wii party boosted game party 3 sales( they are not the same series but a lot of people don't know that)

Because it happened before. Mario Kart Wii boosted Mario Kart DS.

Let's see, how to prove this. Right, here goes. First, I'm going to compare Q1 sales of 2007 and of 2008 for Mario Kart DS.

Mario Kart DS Worldwide sales

Quarter 1 2007: 669k

Quarter 1 2008: 791k

So in Quarter 1 2008, Mario Kart DS was slighty larger (18%) than it was in Q1 2007.

Mario Kart Wii launched in Quarter 2. Here's the sales from that quarter.

Quarter 2 2007:  550k

Quarter 2 2008: 1032k

That month the difference was quite a lot larger. 2008 is 88% larger than 2007 all of a sudden. There's next to nothing to thank for the boost other than Mario Kart Wii.

Then, quarter 3, the difference was slightly smaller.

Q3 2007: 580k

Q3 2008: 798k

Difference of 37.5%.

Finally, quarter 4.

Q4 2007: 1263k

Q4 2008: 1808k

Difference of 43%

I don't see any other major reasons for Mario Kart DS's boost than Mario Kart Wii. It also seems quite logical to me. The two games definitely aren't in competition with each other, you play them in complete different situations. But, if you buy Mario Kart 3DS and love it, you'll be interested in buying Mario Kart Wii and playing it with your friends. Vice versa, if you buy Mario Kart Wii and love it, you'll be interested in buying Mario Kart DS for when you're not at home.

I also believe there's a certain long-term effect to this, but I can't prove that.

It's not unique to just Mario Kart, either. The same applied to New Super Mario Bros (DS) and Super Mario 64 DS.

Will the xmas bundle continue through the fiscal year?

I'd say by 2012. Man 30-mill makes it one of the most successful games ever launched. To be honest I would have rather seen Smash Bros Brawl reach those kinds of numbers. But what can you do people just seem to love Mario Kart!
