Forums - Microsoft - Kinect gets more interesting, plays call of duty.what next?

That looked horribly inefficient to me (as seen by the assault course...or maybe it was just the player, probably both) and completely gimmicky. I don't see the point of a new control scheme if it's actually worse than the current control schemes. Some of the gestures look fun; the jumping for instance, but it also seems like a waste of time when current control schemes . The gesture stuff is already being used in Wii games and to a lesser extent in Move.

Also, at 1:13-1:25, anyone notice how he moves the wii-mote but no actual movement register on the screen?

Anyway, people need to stop thinking of how Kinect will work in current games with well-established control schemes and start thinking how Kinect can shape new and innovative experiences.

Kinect for games like this seems like a bad idea, too many limitations and problems with the Kinect system alone. A hybrid system would work but then I'd rather just play with standard controllers (or, better yet, mouse and keyboard).

I'm sorry but I still don't buy into the whole motion control concept for games at all.

Looks cool. I want to try this...

Microsoft has yet to advertise "core" games for Kinect.  But we have seen "core" games like Madworld and No More Heroes for the Wii and Resident Evil 5 for the PS3 Move along with the upcoming Killzone 3 and Dead Space 2.  Hey, with Kinect and a controller, why not have a Resident Evil Kinect version out sometime as well as a Kinect and controller enabled Dead Space 2?  It's very clear what a "camera" and "controller" combo can do.  We've... seen it already.  Just saying.

Wait so killzone 3 and dead space 2 have body tracking for the move? sounds cool

Yes, the PSEye is capable of body tracking, and how much it would be used I do not know.  But I'm sorry to inform you that both Killzone 3 and Dead Space 2 for the PS3 will not utilize body tracking at this moment.

Why not?  Seems like a perfect opportunity to.  Could it be because it's simply not capable of reliably doing all these things PS3 fans seem to keep saying it is?

The one game we have now that does head tracking with the PSEye is GT5 and by most accounts it is unreliable, imprecise and only works in specific configurations.

Well, it's sort of like this.  Kinect can control (controller free) core games about as well as the PSEye can do fullbody tracking.

Nintendoes what Kinecan't!

*SCNR*

Not bad for a first try. I imagine with a whole dev team behind it doing a whole load of polishing it could work.

But it shows MS will need to think about a controller at least for movement. If they do that and mix in the body movement ability of the sensor then i think it could be pretty cool.

And i can't believe people are still talking about comparing the eye toy and kinect....

Well, it's sort of like this.  Kinect can control (controller free) core games about as well as the PSEye can do fullbody tracking.

I don't think it was ever intended to control FPSs, that's why they already include a controller with every Xbox 360.  Microsoft has been clear from the beginning that Kinect wasn't ideal for every genre of game, it's strength lay in games that aren't possible with any current control scheme as well as augmenting other genres via voice control and body/head tracking.

However your point really is just a potshot at Kinect and doesn't really address my point.  I keep hearing how PSEye can do all the same stuff that Kinect can do yet you never see it.  That's because it can't.  Move is great at what it does but it doesn't do a lot of what Kinect can do.  It doesn't have the technology to do full body 3D motion tracking or even head tracking if you're sitting more than 3-4 feet away from it.  It simply doesn't have the resolution to be able to accurately follow where you are looking.

In a hybrid control scheme for an FPS Kinect would be very useful for body tracking (dodging left right, ducking etc) and for head tracking.  I would also be useful for arm gestures.  This is all possible, right now, with programming that is already part of the tech.  This video is evidence of that.

I love it.

So many in this thread keep saying:

Kinect is better because all you need is a controller and it can do everything Move/Wiimote can do and more.

But can't we just say the opposite?

All the Move needs is a better camera so it can do better body tracking and it can do everything Kinect does and more.

It's simple, Kinect is better for body tracking and Move is better for precision gesters.

And yes, the PS3 camera can do very limited body tracking, it's just not used by developers. I mean, PS2 camera has games that did limited body tracking, come on..

I personally can't imagine using body tracking while playing a FPS. I really don't want to be wiggling my entire body around will trying to frag someone..

This is an absolute lie and you know it.  Kinect was hyped to above and beyond the moon and stars prior to the release of the product.  It wasn't sold as a limited peripheral for Dance and Exercise games,  you and I both know that.

Only after the release and some of the initial disappointment set in that this product may just be exactly that a dance/exercise type of peripheral,  did Microsoft representatives come out and mention hybrid possibilities.

The PSEye can do many of the same things that Kinect can do at a worse level.  If that makes it easier to digest then so be it.  Kinect is strictly reliant on the Camera.  Obviously,  Kinect will be superior when it comes to terms of strictly the camera.

However,  Kinect cannot do a lot of things that Move or Wii can do and we have to keep hearing about how Kinect can do 'everything'.

In a hybrid control scheme for an FPS Kinect would be very useful for body tracking (dodging left right, ducking etc) and for head tracking.  I would also be useful for arm gestures.  This is all possible, right now, with programming that is already part of the tech.  This video is evidence of that.

Obviously.  You're forgetting one very important piece.  Microsoft didn't opt for a hybrid solution.  They sold their solution as the means to an end.  If Microsoft completely copied the Sony solution to the problem, then yes we would see this wonderful hybrid control scheme.    Again though, we're adding other peripherals and a whole host of other things.

If this is the case,  then what would stop Sony from making a Kinect camera for their own system to work with their move controller?

This discussion is completely circular and very pointless.   "If Kinect adds peripherals like PS Move, then it will be the end all  be all motion control solution."  Unfortunately,  all three companies could 'add' onto their existing motion tech and come up with a comparable solution.
