I don't think it was ever intended to control FPSs, that's why they already include a controller with every Xbox 360. Microsoft has been clear from the beginning that Kinect wasn't ideal for every genre of game, it's strength lay in games that aren't possible with any current control scheme as well as augmenting other genres via voice control and body/head tracking. This is an absolute lie and you know it. Kinect was hyped to above and beyond the moon and stars prior to the release of the product. It wasn't sold as a limited peripheral for Dance and Exercise games, you and I both know that. Only after the release and some of the initial disappointment set in that this product may just be exactly that a dance/exercise type of peripheral, did Microsoft representatives come out and mention hybrid possibilities. However your point really is just a potshot at Kinect and doesn't really address my point. I keep hearing how PSEye can do all the same stuff that Kinect can do yet you never see it. That's because it can't. Move is great at what it does but it doesn't do a lot of what Kinect can do. It doesn't have the technology to do full body 3D motion tracking or even head tracking if you're sitting more than 3-4 feet away from it. It simply doesn't have the resolution to be able to accurately follow where you are looking. The PSEye can do many of the same things that Kinect can do at a worse level. If that makes it easier to digest then so be it. Kinect is strictly reliant on the Camera. Obviously, Kinect will be superior when it comes to terms of strictly the camera. However, Kinect cannot do a lot of things that Move or Wii can do and we have to keep hearing about how Kinect can do 'everything'.
In a hybrid control scheme for an FPS Kinect would be very useful for body tracking (dodging left right, ducking etc) and for head tracking. I would also be useful for arm gestures. This is all possible, right now, with programming that is already part of the tech. This video is evidence of that.
Obviously. You're forgetting one very important piece. Microsoft didn't opt for a hybrid solution. They sold their solution as the means to an end. If Microsoft completely copied the Sony solution to the problem, then yes we would see this wonderful hybrid control scheme. Again though, we're adding other peripherals and a whole host of other things. If this is the case, then what would stop Sony from making a Kinect camera for their own system to work with their move controller?
This discussion is completely circular and very pointless. "If Kinect adds peripherals like PS Move, then it will be the end all be all motion control solution." Unfortunately, all three companies could 'add' onto their existing motion tech and come up with a comparable solution. |
