Anyway, I don't believe Halo 3 to have had a $200 mill marketing budget and even $100 mill is far too much when I think about it. Calculated revenue for a Halo game (from Microsoft's perspective in 2007 before release) would have been roughly 10 million copies times $20 per copy = $200 mill, so a sane publisher wouldn't spend half of that on just marketing, no way.

So $50 mill (or less) is reasonable in my opinion. I'm just thinking out loud here now and rambling.

They seem to have reported a $200 million budget in advertisement (which doesn't seem farfetched, since Master Chief was all over the place, all over the world) but no doubt they meant to pull as many people as possible into buying Xbox 360s.

Even if they had lost money on Halo 3, they would still get humongous amount of new Xbox 360 costumers which probably bought the Gold membership right after, and we also know that Microsoft can afford to lose money to push their business.

Except no one reported anything officially.

There is 1 source which lists 200 million and 10 other, much more credible ones which list 30-40 million for advertising. I see how 200 million serves your "Crysis is more profitable than Halo 3 ZOMG"argument, but lets put bias aside.

Also, the quarter when Halo 3 came out was the first profitable quarter for MS gaming division, since Halo 2. http://www.gamespot.com/news/6181753.html

MS makes plenty of money with Halo and doesn't need to give it away for free by spending 200 million on advertising after spending 40 million on making it...

and how do PC game sales work ?

Far Cry has been at 2 million for ages. Same for Crysis. Those are just normal legs for million selling games. Nothing spectacular.

Far Cry just topped out at 2.5 million. It might still reach 3 million, but not more than that. Almost no one wants to buy it anymore, since it's only advantage (the graphics) is severely outdated.

Crysis on the other hand, is a much more recent and much better game. It still has a few years left of decent sales. I can see it reach 4 or 5 million. It will go through several Steam sales, and Crysis 2's release will help some, then bundles with Crysis Crysis 2, etc...

Most console games sell most of their sales in the first month, while PC games tend to keep selling for years and years, with many PC games selling less than 10% of it's lifetime sale in the first months.

Starcraft 1, for example, sold only 1.5 million in the first year, then sold an extra 11 millions the following years. Starcraft 1 probably sold less than 5% of it's lifetime sales in the first month.

This is very true when it comes to PC games. I remember an interview with one of the heads of Ensemble (about the time they announced the closure) said the original Age of Empires sold 500,000 in the first 6 months (just about enough to make profit). It's now one of the biggest RTS franchises in the world.

And on Far Cry, the scenery on the highest settings still holds its own against a huge number of games in the current generation.

BS my firend. Starcraft, warcraft RTS, Total War, Civ, Warhammer are all far bigger then AoE. Hell, I bet that there are at least a couple more strategy games out there that sell far more. And if you consider tower defense games strategy games to, then at least a dozen more.

You don't know anything about PC gaming.. Warhammer and Total war, Civ are not bigger than AOE

AOE series sold over 20 million copies worldwidem it's the one of the biggest PC gaming Franchise of all time

Dawn of War 1 sold over 4 millions, and Dawn of War 2 came out not long ago, and seems to be selling even better.
Total War is on a rampage mode, with new games/expansions coming out every year, and all of them seem to be selling quite well.
Civilization we don't know how much it sells, but it's no doubt even bigger than Dawn of War or Total War.

AOE used to be bigger than Dawn of War, TW and Civ, but now all those series are bigger than ever. AOE was the top dog in it's hey day, but the franchise barely grew, if at all. Dawn of War, Total War and Civilization keep growing at a tremendous pace, and has been so for years.

AOE didn't grow. Hell, in the last few years it basically stopped dead. You can blame Microsoft for not nurturing the series.

so this thead talked about aoe, did anyone see the age of empires online footage by ign? the game looks like crap.

best aoe was 2.

Age 3 did quite well for itself even with MS being... well...  MS. I know a number of people who thought Age of Mythology was the last game so it was likely maketed quite poorly. However, it sold over 2 million as of 2008 and was one of the best selling PC games in 2005 (according to the Age 3 Wiki page).

AOE is still a popular franchise, but the series went from AOE2, to AOE3, to nothing. Only now there's an effort with AOE Online, but it looks just a decent effort at best.

I'm not sure that 2 million would make AOE3 one of the best selling PC games of 2005, but 2 millions is still nice, hell, it might have even reached 3 millions already. However, Age of Empire 2 definitely sold more than that in a smaller market at the time.

AOE Online is a lot better than I thought it was going to be (in the beta currently). The art style may look a little strange but as I said previously, it retains the best bits from all AOE games, so it should be good. I still have a few criticisms but that's why it's in the beta stage at the moment. In fact, it's one of the few games where I'm happy to play even though it uses GFWL (which I hate) and it's still only in the beta stage. They're making a decent effort with this title.

I thnk they're still looking for beta players although it takes a while before they finally get back to you.

Also, the art style, weird as it is, I honestly don't notice anymore. It's brighter and a bit more cartoony, but I settled into the classic gameplay and just stopped caring after a while.
