2011: The swan song year for

DS 35 16.36%

PSP 107 50.00%

Wii 29 13.55%

Other system 27 12.62%

None of them 16 7.48%

Total:214

I think 2011 will be the end for the PSP. Outside of Japan, the PSP isn't doing so hot, and with the PSP2 rumored to be coming out the first half of 2011 I see hardware and software sales drying up pretty quickly. Even with the inevitable slowdown of both DS and Wii hardware and software sales, both will still be able to ride out 2011 well enough. I think that the Wii successor is likely late 2012 at this point, and the DS, with a price cut, will still well for a good few years.

Bah!

I think the PSP most likely. I also think the PS2 will be done very early next year save for maybe EA sports titles.

Time for hype

The PSP, nintendo ds still has mega sellers for 2011

I thought 2010 was going to be the PSP's swansong, but I think it had too many awesome games for that (Peace Walker, Ghost of Sparta, Kingdom Hearts BBS, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Persona 3 Portable, etc).

Wii will still sell at the very least decent numbers in 2012, and far more than that if Vitality Sensor is another mega hit. If there's anything people should have learned by now it is not to doubt the potential sales of Wii.

DS is about to be replaced but I believe should still sell strongly for awhile yet, like the PS2 did after PS3 came out. Its sales are too strong now to last only for one more year.

I think it's obviously PSP, it is struggling even now, and PSP2 will probably be out next year.

Some systems will see reduced soft support in 2011 as their successors take up development resources, but for systems like the DS and all its variants, support will still continue as Nintendo will keep the platform as a low cost alternative to the premium priced 3DS.

Unfortunately for DS fans, the 3DS is likely to receive all the key effort titles, particularly Nintendo IPs. Nintendo won't cut off the platform though as the hardware will remain profitable.

The same goes for the Wii, although there can be no transition of development resources until Nintendo releases SDK kits for its successor. It will however, lose some development resources to 3DS projects.

The PSP is a bit of a different story. I believe that Chains of Olympus may be the swan song for the platform, much as GoWII was for the PS2. Yes, soft development continued, and yes, SCE continues to produce the hardware, but as soon as the PSP2 debuts, it will effectively become a lame duck platform, much like the PS2. Still profitable and shuffling along, but with no future other than as a low cost alternative to the premium priced PS2. PSN distribution of PSP games alone will keep the platform around, but I fully expect to see all major new soft titles being developed for the PSP2 exclusively.

None will be dropped from production and cut off from soft support in 2011.

I guess you're talking about Ghost of Sparta? Chain of Olympus was the first game for the PSP released in 2008

Yeah. Ghost of Sparta. I literally played all five GoW games at the same time this year. They kind of blend together.

The way Nintendo positioned the DS this holiday leads me to believe that they plan on easing it out of existence rather than pulling the plug abruptly. No system before it sold as well as the DS did, and as a result it'll be home to many low budget titles, multiplatform titles, indie titles, and licensed titles for years to come.

I don't anticipate it getting major first party releases after Pokemon Black and White, but we may see a few here and there.

I think DS Lite will be discontinued in 2011 and the DSi and DSi XL will receive further price drops, fading away by 2013. 3DS will likely be 250 dollars, which is not quite the mass market price for handhelds. Sure, I expect the 3DS to sell like crazy. But I think the DS will do better with low-income families just as the PS2 has done with the PS3.
