NO! You surely are annoying and unsuferable. That's what alcohool does to you, haven't you heard?
| Cirio said: Thanks for the history lesson, but you're alienating from my original point of alcohol consumption becoming widespread in this society. I took the liberty of finding some sources for you that claim alcohol consumption in fact is increasing. I really don't get why you're arguing against this, because it is clearly obvious that people are drinking more alcohol now and even at younger ages. There are many factors, but this increase in alcohol consumption in the west is also affecting countries in the east that are developing. Like I said earlier, alcohol consumption is increasing in other nations due to easier access to it. However, since the focus of my point is on western nations, I took the liberty of doing a simple google search and finding many studies that indicate alcohol consumption is increasing. You can argue all you want, but it is fairly evident within society that consumption is increasing, especially due to population growth and economical issues. Alcohol consumption increasing among girls/women: Alcohol consumption increasing in Great Britain (bringing health issues): Alcohol consumption increasing in the US: Binge drinking increasing among individuals in the US: Take these as you will, but it is clear in my mind that alcohol consumption, and the peer pressures associated with it are on a rise. EDIT: Not to mention, media influences are also factors in rising alcohol consumption. Also, the strength of the industry now also plays a big role. |
I believe he meant historically, or on a longer-term scale. It may be on a rise compared to a few decades ago, but these levels (and higher) are nothing new, so (even if you grant it as being a problem) it's no a "new problem of this society".
And alcohool sells because it's great :P
Really, great word of mouth. Ads are only useful to try and make you use this alcohoolic product isntead of another. Granted peer pressure exists but most people who drink (specially after a certain, not too old, age) do so because they want, not because of pressure to do it. They may even have started for that reason, but so what.
I realise it sucks when everyone wants to do something you don't, but it's your problem, as in not their fault (and yeah, I realise you know that). You're the one "breaking the protocol". Then again I know quite a few people who manage to hang out sober with a bunch of people who are drinking. I have done this myself a couple times because of medicine. Also, it's not like everyone gets shit-faced every time they drink, it's mostly the other way around, specially girls and people in general in more public spaces and, again, slightly older people. It shouldn't be a problem for you to "go out and just dance" just cause most other people are drinking. And there are actually lots of places where most people are drinking but getting smashed is actually frawned upon.
The way I see it you shouldn't have much of a problem hanging out unless you're insecure, part of a very specific group, as in always drinking to the point of passing out or actually cutting you out for not drinking, or if you just can't stand people when they drink even it's only a little. And most of these problems should be alleviated a lot with time, and I'm not even talking about many years.
EDIT: Oh, and being the only sober guy in the place is a great way to get some action :D
