Sony is expected to issue a new update for its popularPlayStation 3 (PS3) video games console this week, which has approximately 4 million connected owners in the UK, that will allow broadband ISP users access to ITV (ITV Player) and Channel 4's (4OD) commercial TV streaming content.

ITV's move isn't surprising because the broadcaster already announced its plans during August 2010, although it's the first time that we've heard of Channel 4 getting involved. The BBC's hugely popular iPlayer video streaming service has also been available to PS3 owners for some time now.

Having BBC iPlayer and now ITV player and 4OD direct to my main TV is just amazing, and a definate boon for Sony and PS3.

Although Wii has the bbc iplayer, apprently they wont be getting the other 2 services as they wont support ad driven software, thats a bit of a shame for wii only owners.

 

Its hard to believe that PS3 is going to be nearly half a million under tracked in the UK, but never say impossible!

The Guardian is the source quoted on Eurogamer for this and according to The Guardian numbers come from Sony themselves.

Sony estimates that there are about 4m PS3 consoles in the UK and that about 80% of owners are connected to its broadband-enabled service that allows access to catch-up TV and other on-demand content from the likes of LoveFilm.
