Forums - Nintendo - Against the grain: What Nintendo SHOULD have done/should do with the Wii

@lordtheknight  never said it wasnt the cause and eight bucks aint that much, but it should be cheaper, these are freaking SNES/Gen games it cant have cost them anything to throw them on the service. If people are happy with VC then good for them, ill just stick to my emulators of dubious quality until Ninty gives a more fair price (probably not gonna happen) or throws some more N64 games on there (probably wont happen either)

You wrote a sentence that implied it. If that was a mistake in grammar, then okay, but emulation would have happened anyway, so it shouldn't have been brought into that.

As for the prices, it's not about merely how much it cost to put them on the service. This isn't a wholesale service.

@lordtheknight  I understand its not a wholesale service, it just seems to me to be really greedy. ITs not like the files are even that large.IM actually glad it is the way it is, I spend too much money on PSN anyway. THe more im dissapointed in WiiWare/VC the less I will spend

NeoGeo and PC Engine games are the same price on VC and PSN in Japan, and they'll probably stay that way for the US when they come over.  If anything, it's Sony that's undervalued their PS1 Classics with low pricing, though they usually bump up to $10 for the stuff people really want anway.

@jarrod  you say it like its a bad thing, bad for Sony but good for consumers. IMHO (some) of the games are overvalued for VC the ones not worth that much on Amazon as for SOny i think they charge based on size of file. Ive had PS3 for years and the only ones ive seen that are ten bucks are your Final Fantasys and Oddworlds. thats the way it should be

upon closer inspection (amazon.com) maybe 8 bucks aint too bad , those are some obscene prices. 30 plus for a USED Mario Rpg cartridge is outrageous. im sure if I go to some mom and pop stores in NY i can get some more realistic pricing but i know alot of people dont have that luxury, so I see some of your points. I still wouldnt pay for anything on VC outside of N64 and maybe arcade. Not only for pricing I dont like my purchases to be attached to a console, Ninty need to follow SONY and MS way on that one

im gonna play devil's advocate and say that VC games are overpriced. Granted there are some games that you would have to pay obscene prices for cartridges but $8 dollars for a SNES game??? how can anyone with common sense justify that price??? Ninty does it cause they know people will buy it. PS1 games are $6 bucks! 9 for NEOGEO, are they high??? the compilations run you about 15 bucks. Only the N64 games are reasonably priced and surprise, their are hardly any. They wonder why people just emulate, and god help you if your Wii messed up

I have always thought the VC was good (though not always fantastic value for money) because downloading games on the VC is usually significantly cheaper than getting the games on ebay.  On ebay UK, here are the cheapest prices for Zelda II:

For those not familar with the UK sterling currency, I've put $ in brackets, which I got from XE and rounded to 2dp

£15.99

$25.29

Free Time left:23d 1h 38m

£35.00

$53.34

Free Time left:3d 8h 58m

£16.95

$26.80

Free Time left:20d 9h 8m

£14.99

$23.70

Free Time left:1d 10h 40m

Keep in mind that Zelda II on the VC is only 500 points, which is £3.75 ($5.93) assuming one gets there Wii points on the Wii shop channel.  And if we look at Super Metroid:

    1 Bid

£15.00

$23.72

£1.99 Time left:9h 7m

£23.99

$37.93

£1.75 Time left:21d 9h 19m

£59.99

$94.86

£5.00 Time left:8d 13h 54m

    5 Bids

£30.76

$48.64

£3.25 Time left:1d 8h 28m

£23.99

$37.93

£1.50 Time left:15d 2h 11m

    8 Bids

£12.86

$20.34

£2.00 Time left:1d 8h 36m

£49.99

$79.05

£3.00 Time left:14d 2h 3m

    9 Bids

£30.05

$47.52

£5.00 Time left:1d 8h 58m

£20.99

$33.19

£1.10 Time left:28d 16h 13m

Keep in mind that Super Metroid is only 800 points which is £5.60 ($8.86) on the VC.  The sad thing is that I haven't cherrypicked prices, these are direct from Ebay UK.

While the Marginal costs of the VC are very low, the alternative price is so high that Nintendo can justify there pricing strategy.

While Playstation games on PSN are cheaper than games on the VC, remember that on Ebay UK Playstation games are cheaper themselves.  For example, Vagrant Story averages out at about £12 ($18.97) and Grandia for £14 ($22.14).  When Nintendo set the VC prices, they had to take into consideration the alternative legal ways of getting the game, rather than just doing the standard cost-plus pricing.

Now the console locking thing I can understand. Actually, even Malstrom thinks they shouldn't be locked, not even to the same system. He says that portable and home games on VC should be available on any Nintendo system, to ensure consumers can enjoy them anywhere.

Oh no. That's just wrong. Great games re-released for the first time in the West for under £5 each? How is that "overpriced"?

Nintendo should have continued to go down the road they were on when launching the Wii instead of leaving it midway. Nintendo killed the momentum of their console with Wii Music, a game that isn't really a game and more of a creative tool. What's the point of playing a music game, if the player himself rates his performance? The vast majority will see it as pointless, if everyone can get the best grade with ease. The best selling video games are all about challenge and Wii Music goes completely against this idea.

The Wii became as big as it was due to a chain of real killer applications. Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii and then the chain broke with Wii Music. 2008 should have had New Super Mario Bros. Wii as the big holiday title, because then the Wii would have continued to be sold out in America throughout 2009 with Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit Plus and throw in DKCR to run no risk to lose any momentum going into 2010.

The only real chance Nintendo had to get serious third party support was to continuously destroy the HD consoles in the sales race and they messed it up. Moneyhatting isn't really an option, because even Microsoft's money could only get them so far.

They didn't really mes it up though did they? It outsold everyone's predictions, by a long way, but the fact is, the "killer apps" which you mentioned above were all that were really needed to keep the Wii's momentum. That is something the HD consoles don't have; a steady stream of killer 1st party games, which is why there's such a "cult" following for Nintendo games!

I disagree. Sony has shown how talented their 1st party developers are this gen. In fact I may be so bold to say that in terms of quality, they have at least matched Nintendo and maybe even exceeded them.

Woah woah woah, now I love GT5 and Ratchet and Clank as much as the next person, but you can't seriously be saying that these games are better than the 2 galaxies, DKCR etc.?
