Forums - Sony - PSP2 to Rival PS3 Graphics

Graphics don't sell a system; software sells a system.

If Sony was in the auto dealing business, here is what they would sound like: "This car is so cool! The engine has so many cylinders, it can go from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds, it has so much torque, and did I mention what it's top speed is?"

There would be no mention of safety features, cup holders, gas mileage and on. All the talk would be about how powerful the car is. Problem is, unless you are selling a muscle car, truck to a blue collar guy, or a lamborghini, the average customer could give a damn about how much torque the engine has.

Sony with the PSP2 is going the same route as the PS3 where the focus is almost entirely on the graphics processing power before we hear about the software. I heard about the software of the 3DS before I learned how powerful the 3DS is.

PSP2 is dead on arrival. I can't wait to be confirmed and feel smug when they announce the entry price point, which if over $250, then well...Anyone want to put a 40th stake through a dead vampire?

I'm not saying that you will definitely be wrong, but you sound like it's already announced, but it isn't. Of course we hear about the hardware first (although just rumours). If they announce it with only crappy software and a price of 349 or 399, then you can start to claim that it will be dead on arrival.

And a price of 299 wouldn't be bad actually. The 3DS will very likely be 249, so if the PSP2 is a bit more expensive doesn't mean that it's doomed.

It's a bit too soon to claim that Sony is prioritizing hardware over software. They haven't actually officially announced this thing yet; they haven't even confirmed that it exists. All this hardware talk is just rumor.

The power this device will supposedly possess sounds nice, but what I consider the most intriguing feature is the rear touchpad. I'm courious to see how that will be implemented in the games. This and a few other features could be exactly what the PSP2 needs to set it apart from other handheld devices, most notably the 3DS.

If the PSP2 has phone capabilities, then it will be set far apart from the 3DS.

As for claiming it is too soon that Sony is prioritizing hardware over software...I have been wrong before and may be again.

If it is going to "rival PS3 in graphics," then the price point will most likely point higher to $349 knowing what Sony did with the PS3 when it was first released.

As for it being "doomed," I believe the market has changed from when the DS and PSP were first released. During that time, the mid-2000s, gaming on cell phones was in it's infancy and not as prevalent as it is nowadays. Thusforth, the DS/PSP generation of handhelds benefitted from not having that asymmetrical competition the 3DS and PSP2 will have to contend with.

This is why I said "dead on arrival," but I could be wrong as I have been before many times in the past.

As for it being "doomed," I believe the market has changed from when the DS and PSP were first released. Back then, the iPhone was just coming out and becoming popular. During that time, the mid-2000s, gaming on cell phones was in it's infancy and not as prevalent as it is nowadays. Thusforth, the DS/PSP generation of handhelds benefitted from not having that asymmetrical competition the 3DS and PSP2 will have to contend with.

This is why I said "dead on arrival," which I define as a hand-held selling so low in comparison to it's predecessor the parent company continues to support it, but everyone knows it will be the last handheld the parent company ever makes.

I have been wrong before and I could be wrong again. However, I am not gunning for Sony this time around as it is uncool to be bashing on a company whose console I will most likely own next generation. What I really want is for the iOS and other smart phone gaming apps to put the hurt on Nintendo so much because I just love to hate Nintendo due to their backwardness concerning online capabilities, kiddie games, users who will buy a turd from Miyamoto wrapped up with the Super Mario Bros. logo, and on.

Well, about the price, Sony could surprise us all. But we can't really make good guesses before we have an official reveal anyway.

And well, the market has changed, that's true. But I can't really imagine how big the impact on the 3DS and the PSP2 will be. Could be very small, or very big, so we might not see handhelds again after the next handheld gen. But anyway, nothing is really for sure here, it's a wait and see situation.
