In Europe... since the Gamecube era I believe. My first game to get some stars from was Super Smash Bros Melee IIRC. But of course, exchanging the stars for Nintendo Points only works for a year or two. Until that time, you could only get some pictures/screensavers for them (useless) or some collector's items (useless if you don't live in one of the supported countries, which I don't)

Both games have you controlling the tilt of the screen to control gravity, but after that, they are very different. Both have demos, try them out.
