Easier said than done. That would basically mean stay out of the entire sales forum. That entire section has basically boiled down to just a few types of whining in every thread. And since there is a sales site here, I'd like to be able to talk about sales in a civilized environment. Right now, we can't. |
Because it annoys some that people are raisiing a valid issue mind you, as numerous adjustments has shown a certain console was undertrack by more than a million, suddenly has stopped conversation in the forums? I doubt it. Threads like these are the reason there is no conversation the forums. How can there be a civility as you put it, when the titles is talking about how he hates whiners?
There are threads after threads being created from all sides, even from contributers to this sites, that their sole objectif is to create drama and nonesense. There are mostly flame threads that somehow stay open. There isnt going to be any civility until these issues are fixed.
A conversation doesnt mean we have to agree or we have like the opinion of others, but calling out people and saying you hate them is not the way to fix the issue. Invite a dissussion, prove them wrong, don't attack.

This thread ought to sort them out though.
Good thing I never did that. Do I win a cookie?

Above: still the best game of the year.
Well it is a sales site so people are going to talk about the numbers. Don't think you can take that out. Does it get annoying? Absolutely it does. Should it go away? Of course not.
I mean obviously this site does adjustments and every now and then some of those are help brought to light by the community. Now I will admit, the way the community presents it is less than spectacular. Usually it is brought around by personal bias backed up by no factual evidence whatsoever. As someone said earlier, "My game didn't sell more so obviously it is under tracked" or vice versa. But amidst all of those really really bad arguments about it, we do get a few good ones where new evidence is brought up that helps out the situation. Don't think we should take that away. Such as with the PS3 recently, I posted a lot in those threads and 90% of the arguments were terrible. But there were a few that did make the argument of some of the regions in countries in Europe and Asia that may not have sufficient enough data yet to really get the best numbers. Turns out, over time we got that data and were able to adjust properly (mainly thanks to Nintendo themselves providing it so Sony fans thank Nintendo).
So yes while I do get mad about people complaining about it, I only get mad when there reasons for doing it aren't for the right reasons. I mean I like discussing those kinds of things. Wouldn't still be here if I didn't. I just like when the discussions are good ones rather than being damage control. So I hope people continue discuss the numbers and go over multiple sources to make sure we have the most accurate numbers, but I also hope they do it in a respectful way to themselves and the site.
I mostly hate it when whiners complain it's undertracked because... well... because IT IS!!!
I've seen so many of these.

The way I see it, raising an issue is one thing. However, the issue now has been raised. But people keep harping on it, without bringing anything new to the table. This adds nothing new to the boards, rather, it inundates them with duplicate posts. The worst case right now is with the DS vs PS2 camp. Sure, we have the DS numbers approacing the PS2. The PS2 side mentions the shipped vs sold discrepency, and has been acknowledged by ioi as needing adjustment. Fine. This is now known. The DS side needs to stop bringing this up until the numbers have been adjusted for the PS2, and the PS2 side, rather than constantly posting to the thread, should ignore them, and the threads will drop off. What's happening, is that neither side is relenting, and it's resulting in both sides arguing the same thing across several threads with no new information.
Other threads have people talking about the PS3 being undertracked. Well... where's the new news here? It was looked into the first time, when there were actually fewer threads and complainers about it, and it was adjusted when deemed appropriate and backed with more data. Since then, we've had no real new data, and people are still whining about it being undertracked. And they're getting more vocal about it, despite nothing new. The issue needs to be laid to rest until we have more information. If the shipped vs sold number next quarter shows an increasing disparity, then it is fair to look at the issue again, since there is more new and relevant information. This will cause discussion (and arguing, I'm sure), but it doesn't need to come up in every sales thread. And I'm not even going to get started on the games side of things...
Which is what leads us to this thread. It is a website issue- with the users, specifically. When the sales forum becomes flooded with posts which have all shifted to talking about the same few complaints, and no new information in any of the threads, it does become a valid complaint. This thread does not break any rules- it does not go after any system or company allegiances, it does not attack any particular users, etc. I can, however, make an argument for the other side, the posts being complained about, as spamming. And yes, the rules do have a very specific clause I can cite for it, specifically, from rule 7 about substance:
This is what people are doing. And this is why I will be looking to ban people who continue it without any new information. It is not a stretch of any rule; it is clearly worded.
Regarding threads that you feel have a sole purpose of creating drama and stirring things up, feel free to report them through the report post function, or, hell, PM/IM me the offending post/thread. (With a link, please, it's much easier to follow up on, then.) I will say that this thread probably could have used a better subject, but it is not a problem, as it does address a new, and frankly, serious problem.

lol i'd better behave then thanks for letting us know. can you also ban ppl for flaming about overshipping and stuffing channels because that in my opinion causes alot of trouble on here, i don't know why people insist on starting them when all they have is just one little picture of a couple of consoles lying around...
it's the future of handheld

Should the problem persist, absolutely. I'm more doing a reminder in the problem threads about the rules, since some of them are... less enforced than others, which I don't think should be done. All rules should be enforced evenly, but rather than having people complain about things being made up (which they're not), I'm posting reminders. There probably still will be some... claimants, but now there will be plenty for me to point to.

I agree somewhat, it has become frustrating sometimes. It seems in the sales threads there is a lot more posts that just say "I'll wait for NPD", or "I'll wait for ____ finanicial reports" then there used to be. I feel those comments really detract from the sales discussion, and if that is how the person feels (which is fine) I don't see the need for them to be posting in a weekly VGC sales thread.
