Forums - Sales - DS has 36 Games Over 1m Units in Japan, Near Famicom Record

Our data suggests the Famicom had 38 games over 1m units in Japan, and I've seen sources indicated anywhere from 36-41 games over 1m in Japan. Even if we take the high end, DS is only a handfull of hits away from taking a record that has stood for years and years in Japan - most million sellers by platform.

At the moment we have this in Japan:

Famicom - 38 (maybe 41?)

DS - 36

PS1 - 33

SNES - 29

GB - 24

PS2 - 21

Wii - 13

N64 - 12

GBA - 5

PSP - 3 (4 once next round of data comes in, MHP3)

GC / PS3 / Saturn - 1 each

Xbox / X360 / Game Gear / Genesis / others - None

So do you guys think DS will beat Famicom for million-selling titles? If it doesn't, we're going to be waiting a long time, as Wii / PS3 / PSP sure as hell won't get to 38 games over 1m in Japan. 3DS might be able to, but it would take at least five years realistically.

wow at wii too. though the sales are low these days in japan. it has done very well. it has over half the million sellers of the ps2 (of course it won´t pass it though, but I still think numbers are great)

Are there any games currently out that have a shot at it? Looking at this it doesn't seem like it, although I could be wrong.

Ninokuni might possibly be able to but I wouldn't put good odds on it. I'd need to have a look at the future release list to get a better idea. 3DS might cut its chances short. I'm sure the DS will continue to sell amazingly in the west after the 3DS comes out but looking at Japan back in 2005 GBA seemed to tail off rather quickly after DS came out.

I think Ninokuni's a wildcard.  It could really go either way.

The 4th DS Kirby will probably do it.  IE3 and Girl's Mode could crawl past it.  DQMJ2 Professional is probably good bet.  Other than that, I don't see much on the horizon, especially with 3DS looming.

Whats amazing is the 5 mil seller (pokemon BW will be added to the list  soon!). Even the 2 mil list is easily the best ever in japan...

Unfortunately i dont think it will get more million seller(maybe a couple if it is lucky). I dont think it can pass the NES, but to get 36 million sellers in japan, for a handheld that is quite extraordinary!
