D-Joe, they can't lie to shareholders, but shareholders get "sold to retailers numbers". Ms said kinects sold 2,5M "retail sales" so this is obviously an estimation.

I dont see anything that suggests those are sold through numbers.... except when he said restock shelves... (But then when there is stock on the shelf they wont know whats sold through)

5 million to consumers is a goal, and they will know when they reach that goal when they ship more than 5 million. It doesn't mean they are tracking every unit sold. They know their sell through because of stock levels (Which are low) compared to shipments. Nintendo is the only company that has their own tracking agency and its set up through serial numbers on the box that you scan when you sell a unit.

Seriously you guys think NPD, GFK and Media Create can track sale numbers but MS can't? MS pays all of these companies money to track these sales.  They could easily call them up and ask how kinect is selling, its not that difficult.
