Forums - General - Can retailers see your billing address?

I was going to go accross the border to do some Black Friday shopping but we had a freak snow storm and some roads were closed and cars are in the ditch everywhere. So I decided it was too snowy to go out across the border. I realized that Best Buy's website allows you to buy the deals online and have them shipped to you.

So I went and placed my order but when I did I realized I had to be an American citizen with a Zip code. I made some calls and found a place across the border that rents out P.O Box's for 5$ a package. So I set my address on the website to that of the company.

However when I made the order I had to say that the shipping address was also my billing address. Now origionally I thought billing address was simply where they send the bill. I know I was stupid but after making the order I talked with a family member and they told me that the credit cards billing address is what Best Buy meant.

This got me thinking, can Best Buy see my credit cards billing address? Will my order be frozen if they find out? How serious of an offence is it to lie about ones billing address?

Has anyone lied about their billing address on a site before? is it a big deal?

I can't say forsure. I doubt you'll get in trouble.

I've accidently clicked the wrong things before and it got cancelled (this was by newegg). Because I wasn't shipping to my billing address.

It will probably just be cancelled if they require it shipped to your billing.

I hope it doesn't get cancelled. I wonder if Best Buy can see my billing address or does my credit card company require a billing address as confirmation of who I am.

Highly doubt you'll get in trouble.

I'm not sure how much of the address they can see. I worked at some online shop a couple of summers ago and I couldn't see actual billing addresses of credit cards, but I could see mismatches in the country between shipping address, billing address and IP.

Not sure how it works over in the colonies but here in the motherland they use just the house number and the numbers in the post code to confirm billing address the rest of the address is taken purely for audit/marketing. BTW it won't be the retailer that checks but your bank that confirms payment details and they only check a sample of payments or ones that have high alert status due to previous irregular activity.

My unlce pointed this out and I was wondering too. If your purchasing your products at Best Buy why the heck should they care so much if your Canadian or American? Especially if your not even shipping it to Canada? A sale is a sale isn't it? I did give my Canadian phone number too. Hopefully they aren't jerks and let my order go through. if not well I'd be sorta pissed but then again I did pretend to be American.

Best Buy don't care, but as I said its not them that actually does the checking. They process your payment but its the bank that approves it and majority are approved because they only check the name and card details are accurate, some get checked to match up address but its relatively few and that is simply because the bank has to follow audit and compliance checks. The worst they can do is stop your card working until they have spoken to you to ensure its not stolen. Likely all they would do is cancel they payment.

Its actually the same with anything banks do, apply for a new credit card and besides the credit check on everyone much of the details could say anything as only a few are actually checked for audit purposes unless of course  there has been previous irregular activity. Not that I recommend making stuff up as if you do get caught it will stay on your record and get caught too many times thats how you get into serious trouble.

Pretty sure your credit card company will deny it if you put the wrong billing address... Mine certainly does

Sig thanks to Saber! :D

I just talked to my bank. They said they would approve the transaction. However they said that the retailer themselves do check things like billing address and phone numbers etc...etc... so he said while the bank would clear the transaction that the retailer themselves may not.

Man I'd be pissed if Best Buy doesn't approve the sale. I go every Black Friday and buy stuff from them all the time. It would royally anger me that the one year I couldn't go they wouldn't allow me to shop online because I'm Canadian. Capital One said that the transaction is pending and I'll know if Best Buy approves the sale in four buisness days!

So i guess I should know friday! Has any other Mexican or Canadian ever ordered from a store and had to use an American address and pretend to be American?

My uncle says he did so all the time with EBay and Amazon etc...etc... I wonder if anyones ever ran into a problem with the billing address?
