I don't understand all of the call of duty hate. I fucking love the series and will buy every single game that comes out.

This is the mindset of at least 10 million people out there(including me), and I really doubt it's going to change.

Call of Duty won't die anytime soon.

People hate on COD because of the underserving sales. Sure it's a great game. It may even be the best FPS of this gen. I won't argue against that. People hate on it because:

  • It sales about 10 times as much as other FPS when most feels its nowhere near 10 times as great.
  • It takes away sales from smaller games. No one likes a bully
  • It releases everywhere year with little innovation and still outsells the previous title.
The hate is understandable. They're good games though.

Noone cares about the 2nd or 3rd best FPS game out there. The best will always get a disproportionate quantity of attention.

Tell me, if Red Baron was the biggest flying ace in WW1, who was number 2?

Tease.

It's definately being milked, and eventually sales will suffer. This has basically meant they've been gradually going downhill since CoD4. People say it'll last because they bring in changes to the setting, the MP aspects etc. But let's face it, the game mechanics and level designs haven't changed significantly since moving out of World War 2 and that has more to do with the new weaponry available forcing different playstyles and levels than the setting change.

At the end of the day, the core gameplay (which is the most important factor) remains the same with every iteration. The comparison with sports games is also false, because sports games have updated rosters which is why people buy them, even if they're the same game. Even then, without some innovation, sales do dwindle. They can't keep bringing out the same game with new coats of paint. Eventually they'll have to innovate and that is difficult when a new game is being released every year.

Yup, we've been hearing that ever since WaW

What? WaW was a year after MW. The CoD brand had only just built up to the monster we now know it is (basically, it still felt fresh when WaW was released). The point stands that if they can't innovate within the series which is difficult with yearly iterations, then the franchise will dwindle in popularity. This is especially true if they don't innovate but the competition does.

The series didnt really innovate ever since COD4 and ever since than the brand got bigger with every new release

Thats because you'd play more than one in a year. Most of the market would probably only play Call of Duty and nothing else. If you're only playing one then chances are it'll be the best you can find.

Tease.

They will crash indeed, but never because of the lack of a mascot, but because they stopped innovating much since COD: MW. The hype will just die someday, because they'll offer nothing too new or exciting. Yearly installments are not the way to go - the devs just get tired. See the MOH series for an example...

As I said, it was only released 1 year after CoD4 when the hype was still strong. The hype is still strong, but if they keep this going it'll die down. My point still stands.

If the CoD series can't innovate, the series will dwindle, and with annual releases will dwindle faster than a game released every 2-3 years.

Take the Tomb Raider franchise as the perfect example. Initially very popular, they released 5 games in the PS1 gen which only evolved slightly. When they did finally try to innovate, the core team (Core Design, no pun intended) were fresh out of ideas and the competition thrived (e.g. Prince of Persia). Even with a new team creating a reimagined Tomb Raider it still wasn't at the level of the competition.

I think the COD franchise is really endangered because Activision will pull a Tony Hawk/Guitar Hero and over milk the franchise to the point where it gets burnt out and consumers get tired of it, which will eventually tarnish the name. Nothing against Treyarch (Black Ops is a great game), but I think Activison should just stick with Infinity Ward and a game can be made every 2-3 years, rather than leap frogging every single year from Treyarch to Infinity Ward for a new COD game. Infinity Ward seems to make the superior games, so it should really just be them handling the series. If a new game gets pumped out every year, mark my words, the franchise will die soon, unless radical changes in the gameplay is made to keep the series fresh.
