I didn't read the whole thread worth of responses, but I thought I'd provide my two cents.
The secret to controlling your weight is gradual change. Rather than dieting, make a small change to your diet. Then make another small change to it. Keep doing this, and your body will adapt without the problem of hunger, etc.
For instance, if you tend to drink a lot of... the term varies by location - soda, soft drink, fizzy drink, cola, etc - basically, sugary drinks with bubbles... then get into the habit, maybe once a day, of replacing one of those drinks with a glass of water. After a while, you'll be more used to drinking water, and it will be a lot more natural to switch to more water and less of the other drink.
The same reasoning applies to exercise - rather than trying to push yourself to your limit immediately, spend the time to acclimate to the exercise regime by doing it more lightly, with more emphasis on enjoying yourself rather than on getting fit. As your body adapts, you'll find that you more naturally enjoy working out, and will not become "lazy".
It's not the quickest way to lose weight, but in my opinion, it's the best, and the most sustainable.
