While I expected to see gameplay and more info announced by now, it is certainly isn't vapourware. I'm certain we will hear more by this time next year
Nah, I don't think the game is vaporware, it simply takes a long time to create such an epic masterpiece! But really, I CAN see this game being a multiplat game for PS3/Wii, or even moved to 3DS, though I am not sure about the latter, because the 3DS userbase probably won't be that big when the game comes out.
I just got DQIX anyway and still haven't played it. I don't need another DQ right away. Next year or even 2012 sounds about right.

2006. Same year Versus was announced actually (speaking of Vaporware...). :P
I think the OP means why hasn't there been any footage or anything of the game shown, not why isn't it out. Though with Dragon Quest IX released recently and Dragon Quest X not officially anounced I'm guessing there might be some internal debate right now on the game (gameplay, console, something). On another note the reason Dragon Quest IX took 4 years to develop is becaue they had to completely change the gameplay mid way through development or else it would have been released a lot sooner.

DQIX changed it's game design (from ARPG to RPG) just six months after it started. It did get hit with several delays though, it was planned to launch in spring 2008 originally.

It was delayed roughly a year, 6 months of work scrapped plus the time to R&D the gameplay mechanics accounts for that. I'm just saying it's not gonna take 4 years like before and they didn't show anything at TGS so I'm personally thinking they're working on some issues with the game.

The difference between those two is that atleast we see something new of Versus XIII every year, while we don't even know what the DQX logo looks like.
Either way, Square-enix shouldn't announce there games when they don't even know when they are gonna be able to release them.
A lot of the people who where excited back then in 2006 about FFvsXIII probably don't even play games anymore.
