1) The PS3 did as well as it did because of the success of the PS2. Sony had enough consumer goodwill, and enough sway with developers and publishers to keep the PS3 still selling when it was $600. The PS3 has in the last 2 years or so become a good console on its own, but it will never be a force like the PS2 was. The PS4 must sell on its own merits, it cannot be helped along by the PS3.
2) The PS3 is nowhere near the success you present it to be. It will likely end up selling approximately half what its predecessor did. If Sony want to compete with Nintendo next gen, they cannot make a $600 console
