Forums - Gaming - What's stopping PS4 to be sold for $600 again @ launch?

1) The PS3 did as well as it did because of the success of the PS2. Sony had enough consumer goodwill, and enough sway with developers and publishers to keep the PS3 still selling when it was $600. The PS3 has in the last 2 years or so become a good console on its own, but it will never be a force like the PS2 was. The PS4 must sell on its own merits, it cannot be helped along by the PS3.

2) The PS3 is nowhere near the success you present it to be. It will likely end up selling approximately half what its predecessor did. If Sony want to compete with Nintendo next gen, they cannot make a $600 console

well it the PS4 goes on sale in 2013, then taking inflation into account, a launch price of $599 equates to a near 20% price cut to the PS3's launch price.

So don't be surprised if the PS4 starts in the 499 to 599 vicinity. And the same will apply to Wii2 and Xbox whatever when they are released.

That would be the stupidest thing to do. Sony's relations with developers would get pretty bad considering there wouldn't be a whole lot of people buying it at that price point meaning very little sales in terms of software as well. Look at how bad the PS3 was doing software wise at the start of the generation. It took forever to get over 5 games to sell one million. Another result would be MS gaining massive momentum in America and UK and how would Sony fight back if it lost EU? Sony has learned hard that they need to balance sales with profit and I see them releasing PS4 at a good price point, not this $600 crap.

We cannot deny their success in breaking records as the best 3rd place (currently) home console in the video game industry as of now. They may have fallen from selling over 100 million LTD from last generation but they should be able to hit at least 50 million before the next home console hits the market. Would developers really be mad at PS4 for its high price? Many developers stated they wished to continue supporting the PS3 until its 10 year life span is up. That's plenty of time to support the PS3 and PS4.

Sony doesn't care about how many 'records' they break as a third place console. Sony wants to be number one and the only way to do that is to launch at a $400 price point or less. I'm sure Sony would rather have 50 million consoles in it's first two years rather than 50 million consoles after 5 years. Many developers will continue support not because the PS3 launched at $600 but because it is now at a good market price even after enduring a couple of years of terrible sales both hardware and software wise. Sony doesn't want to endure those years ever again so for you to predict that is just nonsensical.

Sony could use those first two years to release their first party titles before dropping to 400$ and looking at how many 1st party games that has sold over a million for the PS3, I think the PS4 can get some support from their fanbase to support them if they provide the quality they want.

And are you sure Sony still wants to be first after this generation? It might be too much trouble for them to shoot from 3rd place to 1st place. Of course Nintendo did it with a much worse place in last place than the PS3, but unlike Sony, Nintendo had a healthy profit from the GameCube, GameBoy, and DS. Sony may want to use this next generation to rebuild their game division with profits from their game division before pulling a Nintendo. Plus consumers wouldn't be too surprised or upset if the PS4 releases for 600$ if it has its quality 1st party sequel from the PS3 and many multimedia features, but not enough to make it sell for a lost. They might even be upset or disappointed if PS4 wasn't a tecnhological beast like PS3 was compared to the PS2.

Uh nope. You sir are wrong.

What's stopping them making another $600 console ($800 to make)?

1. They want to win.

2. They want to make money.

The more consoles they sell = the more games/accessories/PS Plus memberships they sell

I could see it being $400 and then dropping to $300 after a year but no way in hell $600 at launch again.

What's stopping them to make another 600$ (but this time it costs 400$-500$ to make so there would be profit).

This is not only directed to you, but man, are people even reading my posts? I actually have some good reasoning there..... Or maybe my reasoning is pretty bad, iono.

Sony realizing that $599 is the sole reason they're in third place this gen?

There was a $499 sku.

LOL you act like they've been making tons of money!

PLAYSTATION BRAND  was the biggest thing in gaming when PS3 launched so they could afford to  launch PS3 at such a high price and still be around

it won't be the same with PS4,yeah PLAYSTATION is still a very big thing but not as big as when PS2 was around

also there is no need to launch at $600,it was with PS3 cause they wanted to push BLu-ray otherwise it would have launched at $400 and profited from the start

Ask your self this...

Why would you want to repeat a tragic car accident that happened to you before?

Of course you learn from your mistakes and avoid that from happening again.
