Forums - Nintendo - Here we go again: Heavy Rain creator calls Wii a toy and board game

He may have chosen his words poorly, but his point is spot on. The Wii and PS3 are in different leagues when speaking on entertainment. They do many different things and appeal to two totally different types of consumer.

Really not anything many others haven't said before.

True, but pricing reflects that too.  Some people just want a reliable car that gets them back and forth and others want a luxury vehicle with amenities galore.  But the both get you where you need to go.

Calling the Wii a toy is demeaning.  I'm not a big fan of it, but its a video game system just like the PS3 is.  PS3 can do more in impressive ways, but its still a game console.

At this points developers should know not to say things this inflammatory.  Its unnecessary and never constructive.

Well he is entitled to his opinion.

But not to his own facts. The fact is that the form of a video game does not change the fact that it is a video game, same with game players. If one is a toy, extra features just make s the other a toy with extra features.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Guess I will cross out Heavy Rain off my list of games I'm picking up when the holiday sales kicks in.

Well, I would rather have fun with a ''toy'' than getting bored to watch a bad movie that is supposed to be a game. Looking at the sales, it seems I'm not the only one.

Just my two cents...

Let's get the translation clear here shall we.

"quelque chose qui s'apparente à un jouet, ou à un jeu de société très sympa avec la Wii"

MEANS:

"something that resemble a toy or an enjoyable board game like the Wii"

So he never actually said the Wii was a toy or a board game. He said it's similar to it. Which isn't too far-fetched.

I can tell, I speak french.

And the reason why he says that the PS3 is basically not like a toy is because of it's other features like the blu-ray player or the movie store, etc.

No, "un jeu de société" means "a boardgame", you're mistranslating by deconstructing the phrase and translating word by word.

Cage also says Wii had distorted the natural market, and that Nintendo's "Wii empire" is now over.  People saying Cage is being misquoted should watch the full interview, he's pretty dismissive in regards to Wii and Nintendo and he's not exactly indirect about it.

Uhm, no. I spoke to a french friend about this and In italian we have the identical expression: "gioco di società" or literally "social game" or "game of society". It includes boardgames, card and dice games but also what is usually indicated as party games in English. Pinata, charades, bingo, madlibs-like narrative games, etc are all "jeu de société" even though they are not board games.

Boardgame is the most direct english translation, and not exactly uncommon (most machine translators will refer to it this way).  I explained later that the term is really more inclusive though, keep reading.

I like board games.

EDIT: Nevermind, there's some confusion about what he really said...?

Whatever, I still like board games.

As I told Werekitten, this will likely go ignored. People just want to hate on this man (trust me, I've kept watch since 2006), because he does things his own way. I've actually listened to him praise the Wii plenty, but again, that goes ignored as well.

Thanks for clearing that up though.

No one's ignoring anything, his comment was overtly dismissive and plays into a larger narrative of where he wants to see games go.  Cage sees games as art, which is fine, and legitimate, but his view of art pushes in a pretty narrowly cinematic direction imo.  Art isn't just narrative or plot, in fact art usually has no traditional narrative or plot if you really want to get into it.

And this wasn't even his only comment on Wii in the interview.  Again, he said Wii unnaturally distorted the market (in a pretty negative tone btw), and that the Wii "empire" was over now, for two examples.  People aren't exactly hating for hate's sake here, people have serious disagreements with Cage's comments here.
