30-35m more sales are a given? In this industry at this point?
That might be possible if you swallow the PR and think next gen is really 5 years away still...

PS3 will pass the 360 in 2011. PS3 moves to second place and starts chasing down the "invincible" sales leader. PS3 started slower but was at a much higher price than the Wii. Almost 4 years after the launches the Wii is on 75 million and the PS3 just over 40 million sales. Wii sales started fast and well peaked in second year 2008 with 25 million sales. The sales of the Wii are expected to trend downwards over time. 2009 (20 million sales) was a 20% decline on 2008 sales. 2010 sales should be another 15% to 20% decline on 2009 sales: 16 to 17 million Wii console sales for 2010. PS3 may even claw back the sales gap on the Wii as its big games and price cuts help boost PS3 sales. PS3 in the next 5 or 6 years may well outsell the Wii by 30 to 40 million console units. Time will reveal all. PS3 can possibly make the biggest come back in console wars history. 2016 may well see the PS3 over take the Wii in total console sales. The chances are very slim but the PS3 has a chance of re-writing history. |
The PS3 has already made the biggest comeback in the history of video games, no last place console ever sold like the PS3 and it's going to continue.
Also it's definitely possible for the PS3 to pass the Wii, but it will take the next 5 or 6 years to do so and it'll just barely pass it. The Wii has a big lead and that's going to take some time to pass. But then again nothing's impossible, especially this gen. So it might not be that crazy to imagine the PS3 selling like 20 million consoles in it's 5th or 6th year out.

Dude the PS3 is outselling the DS right now with Move, there's still GT5 to boost sales into oblivion in EMEAA and several more price cut's to go, it's still at $299 and $350, imagine sales for a $199 PS3.

You think those factors will boost it permanently? Haven't historical trends taught you the temporariness of price cuts? The fact that they may boost sales for a few weeks but just fizzle into nothing? That one game never boosts sales that much? Maybe for a couple weeks?
The PS3 will return to its original levels after the holiday, perhaps slightly larger than before. Its sales will decline into 2012 with the PS4 on the horizon. The Wii is also going to pass the 110 million mark, so if you think the PS3 is going to almost triple its LTD sales when it's life is 80% over, you've got another thing coming.

I imagine they'd pale in comparison to a $99 Wii.
People seem to overlook that Wii's held price higher, longer than any system in history. Though really, we'll probably only get down to $149 before Nintendo retires it I bet. :/
Jarrod are you as confident that the ps3 wont reach 75million as you were that pokemon gold or silver was going to be the best selling single game in last marchs NPD. And not GOW3
If so then 75 million confirmed
All bow to me the VGChartz current reigning 3DS prediction champion
Bet with tbone51: Pokeon X & pokemon Y will not sell more than 8 million in 2013

July 2009 daveJ said: True the wii has a large lead now but by 2017 the most likely result will be 1. ps3 2. xbox360 3. wii <-- wii's successor launched in 2011 effectively killing sales of the wii
2009 daveJ said: The wii will not break the 50% marketshare barrier it will go below the 40% marketshare barrier though in the future. VGChartz members: Impossible, youre an idiot that knows nothing about sales

The Slim / $299 was only temporary? It's a year later and the sales are still up alot from this time last year.
"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY." --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
