Forums - Sony - What made PS1 so special?

It's library of innovative titles are still unmatched, I think. Every genre was robust, there was something for everyone, and it really brought gaming to a level it hadn't been in previous generations, not to mention introducing the most ergonomic controller since the SNES controller.

That and it's still my favorite console to date.

That's your opinion, as for me I've always disliked the PS controllers. The Sega Saturn controller (the 2nd version/ JP version) just destroys the original PS1 controller, IMO. The PS1 controller got even worse once they threw those 2 analog sticks on it.

Let's see the N64 came out late, had little to no 3rd party support, the games were expensive (as they weren't CDs)

Sega Saturn: launched at a higher price than the PS1, had a very botched launch (it's available now!), had a very complex system that was hard to make games on, 1st party support was excellent (sega games), but 3rd party support was spotty/hit or miss. (outside of Japan)

PS1: launched at a lower price than the Saturn, system was easy to program for/make games for, low cost games (CDs), excellent 3rd party support.

Third parties, CD format, third parties, third parties, and third parties.  The PS1 was the console where third parties really cut loose.  Sony provided Eidos, Capcom, Konami, Square, etc. a console that they could go crazy with.  And go crazy, they did.  Boundaries were pushed, new ideas were realized, and Sony (and gamers) reaped the benefits.  Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, etc. these were games that Nintendo's 64 bit console was just incapable of producing without some serious technical limitations (I know about RE2 for the N64.  Shut up.).

Sony didn't really do anything special.  Nintendo cut their own balls off by sticking with the cartridge format and Sega screwed up by creating a console with the word "Sega" on it (gamers were pissed with Sega by the time the Saturn launched.).  With no place else to turn, the fairly solid PS1 was the heir to the throne.  If you were a gamer without a PS1 from 1996-2000, I really pitied you.

This the right hardware at the right time for creating theses awesome Games and then some.  the SEGA SATURN was also  Notoriously difficult to Program. the SATURN made the PS3's programing difficulty's seem mute in comparison.

and Bernie Stolar also said that Japanese 2D RPGs and 2D Games would sell in west.

Another thing was, I think later on in the lifespan of the 2 consoles..newly released games on the PS1 were $40.00, where as on the N64, it was most of the time $50.00.  I don't know if this true though, just something my parents noticed because I was a child at the time..and yes, $10 does make a difference to Americans.

Not only that, some N64 games cost in the neighborhood of $80 (MK Trilogy for $40 on PS1 vs $59 on N64)!  Plus, the N64 launched with only Pilotwings and Super Mario 64.  The hardware drought continued from there.  I begged and pleaded for a decent fighting game (sorry guys, Killer Instinct Gold was a shitty port--for $79 no less!) or a good traditional rpg (Quest 64? WTF was that!?).  As usual, Nintendo just did their own thing.  Mario, Banjo Kazooie, Goldeneye, Blast Corps (Rare was hot shit, back then), Wave Race, etc that were critically acclaimed but were slow to hit the market and when they did, the media was quick to point out that the games were a little "kiddie" when compared to Sony's games.  It was a revolution.

It was like Nintendo made games that were incredible when I was 12, but now when I was 19, Nintendo was still making games that were great for when I was 12 (fun for all ages, actually).  GTA, PO'ed, Loaded, Twisted Metal, and such were looking pretty damned appealing.  What pushed me over the edge and made me buy a PS1--The King of Iron Fist Tournament.  Tekken 2 made me jizz in my pants!  Hell, I bought 2 PS1 games (Tomb Raider and Resident Evil) before I could even find a system.

Oh, thought this thread was about Phantasy Star 1.....well....guess I don't have much to say in that case.

hahah...now that would be a thread worth arguing about :)

Phantasy Star 1 is one of the most underrated JRPGs of all time. It was foolish of me to think there would be a thread about it. I'm an older gamer, whenever I see PS I think Phantasy Star first then Playstation.

Then I guess you found nothing special about the PS1, which is the point of the thread.

And of course it's my opinion, but it has some real validity seeing as the PS1's basic Dualshock controller design has been carried over for two newer gens.

I never said that. I actually enjoyed the PS1 quite a lot (even though I didn't like the controller). The games were still enjoyable and it was my 2nd favorite console of that generation. In terms of Playstation systems, I personally rank them as PS1>PS2>PS3. Though the PS2 is quite close to the PS1 for me.

It had mature/adult games. I owned both and aside from 007/Perfect dark, it was a pretty much an E for everyone experience. After gaming on the Atari2600,NES,Genesis,SNES...that shit got old. Games like Resident Evil,Metal Gear,Syphon Filter,Twisted Metal...they were fresh and new. Instead of cutesy games, we had gore. Instead of hearing "it's a me...a mario" we were hearing people say "give me the fucking gun". Instead of saving Hyrule for the 100th time, we were saving the world from international terroists etc.

It was gaming for adults who wanted something with bite...an edge. THAT'S what made the PS1 special and what allowed it to dominate.

I think this is it. Though I kept a Nintendo loyal, Sony's console offered me what Sega promised: what Nintendon't.

Piracy.. It was the right time when 2X CD burners had the right pricepoint... I don't think any of my friends had an un-modded ps1.. copying games with a 2X CD burner was easy...

This was totally right for countries as mine (Argentina), I don't know about the US, Europe and Japan..

It validates the laziness of Sony when it comes to controller design. The PS1 and PS2 were the most popular consoles and people good used to the poor design. When the PS1 controller first appeared people bitched about how badly designed it was. The D-Pad in particularly drew huge criticism. Even the most ardent of PS fanboys admitted that the Japanese Saturn pad was superior. I could point out the fact that people continue to find ways to make their Saturn controllers work with their newer consoles. Such efforts would indicate the superiority of it's design.

PS1 was a 3rd party publisher console.

N64 did not have CD's and Sega didn't have any marketshare (outside japan) so 3rd parties flocked to PS1 and delivered most of the best games exclusively to sony's machine.

It was the easiest to program for, most affordable, and sony made a lot of right decisions with it. Basically everything they did wrong with the PS3, they did right with PS1.

So what made PS1 special? I believe the right answer is...Games! Exclusives! Mature market! Hype! CD medium done right! 3D!

In that order.

becauseyou couldn't just state the merits of the ps1 without trashing Sony in some way, be the same person calling out all the hate against 360 lol.
