Forums - Sales - 3D Tvs Report: Sales not growing as fast as expected

3D wont be doomed and never will be

3D will be added to heaps single new TV in the future, just like all new TV's offered "HD" then Full 1080p HD. 3D will run like that. Soon 3D will be the norm in all future TV's, and even if you dont use 3D in the future you would have an TV that can run 3D.

Hey we experienced this not long ago to, anyone forgetting how sceptical we all were about HD

There was limited content, you needed an digital tuner and people seemed that SD was good enough. Look now every TV offers HD, there are heaps of HD channels.

3D will be the same as the HD conversion, hell i am in Australia and there is already a 3D channel, it shows nothing at the moment but sporting games and some 3D content.

HD is completely different. There's no plausible reason for turning off HD (You can never have to many pixels) but their are tons of reasons for turning off 3D.

This is my sig.

It took about a year and 8 months, but I grew tired of 3D gaming. I don't even bother taking the glasses out of the pouch when I play a PC game, even if 3D compatible...

Glad I got bored of the technology before it even took off in the mainstream :)

Donate everything to me! :P

Hah...I am going to be selling my glasses soon. Need to pay for the vacation i went on and ill be going on again in a month...

I can't talk about other regions but here the cost difference fromHD to 3D is minimal.  Really the only factor is 3D is only available on fairly large screens but if you were going for one that large anyway, it's only a couple hundred more for the 3D.   A small cry compared to the huge price difference from SD to HD.

I finally have a HD TV but no HD content.  Like most people I got HD for the screen size (and comparive light weight/size) not the resolution.

3D won't take off until there's

A) Content.  There's virtually nothing.  The only reason to get 3D is future-proofing as there's almost no content.

B) Glasses free.  The cost of glasses is prohibitive but more-over, inconvenient.  It'll never catch on big with glasses required.   Even if glasses were free and all content was available in 3D, most people would do without the glasses (and 3D) most of the time, unless watching something where it mattered.

In the mid 1990s (around 1995) HDTVs were beginning to be released and manufacturers were convinced that HDTV was going to be mainstream very quickly ... In 2010 HDTV adoption in households finally hit 50%, and even then a large portion (last I heard over half) of HDTV owners do not watch any HD content.

Realistically, until every TV sold is a 3DTV I wouldn't expect many people to adopt to 3DTVs; and I wouldn't expect most people to own a 3DTV and have access to 3D content until after 2020 ...

Also, the invention of LCD TVs helped HD adoption immensely. If we were stuck with the old glass tube technology, I bet HD wouldn't have been nearly as successful.

Likewise in order for 3d to be successful, I believe that a different technology without glasses will be needed for it to be a mainstream technology like HD.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

The current 3D TVs feel like a bad buy like the early DVD players. I would strongly recommend to wait for 3D TVs without the need for glasses.

This. It will become bigger, but it'll be a while yet.

I played Gran Turismo 5 in 3D recently and it was terrible. I definitely wouldn't buy one.

Did you try the in-car view? That's where it really makes a difference.

What? When did this happen???

It started when I set up my 3 monitors in surround...which are 2D. To use 3D, I have to go in to my profiles and disaple the 3 monitors and make my 3d projector the primary display.

That alone wouldn't really be a big deal, but I went through the whole backlog of 3D capable games which interest me. The new releases don't really float my boat, despite being in 3D. I play games cause of gameplay, and when the gameplay doesn't interestet me, visuals don't matter at all.

Also, I am finding the 3 monitor surround a bit more immersive than 3D vision on a single screen.

3D Vision is still a great product in my opinion and easily the best 3D solution you will be able to buy for many years... but once you go through all the old games you liked and play them in 3D...you will be starving for content that you actually want to play.
