In the mid 1990s (around 1995) HDTVs were beginning to be released and manufacturers were convinced that HDTV was going to be mainstream very quickly ... In 2010 HDTV adoption in households finally hit 50%, and even then a large portion (last I heard over half) of HDTV owners do not watch any HD content.

 

Realistically, until every TV sold is a 3DTV I wouldn't expect many people to adopt to 3DTVs; and I wouldn't expect most people to own a 3DTV and have access to 3D content until after 2020 ...
