Forums - General - What happened to 'Real Music'

"Real" music is stronger than it's been in decades. You just have to know where to look. Thanks to digital distribution and satellite radio, we no longer have to listen to whatever the studios shove down our throats.

Hop on over to Pitchfork.com and check out their reviews. It's a huge site and the guy who founded it is pretty awesome because he gives me free VIP tickets to Pitchfork's music festivals. :D

I agree that music in general is getting worse. I mean that's not to say that there isn't any good music out there but I think that there have been some really bad trends.

I especially have a hatred of auto-tuning in songs. Once upon a time it was only used in dance music which is fine for that genre. Unfortunately now though it has made its way into mainstream songs. One of the best examples is Kesha who has been successful while not having to even use her natural voice which I fear will spawn more and more talentless wonders.

I am continually now being forced to go back to my old school collection in order to enjoy music. Hopefully this is just a short term trend and things will get better.

Try some Mt Eden Dubstep - Sarah McLachlan: Silence. On YouTube.

two words: Lupe Fiasco

check this guy out, he's a lyrical genius

The majority of music on the radio has never been "real music"; someone original comes along with an idea, it takes the world by storm, the record labels start to get as many copycats as they can; everything on the radio starts to sound the same, people get sick of it; new person comes along to start a new fad and repeat

Even if "real music" was on the radio, it would quickly become generic and pretty much downright terrible; remember the awful indie rock that was on the radio before this current Electronic-Autotuned thing?

I tend to prefer music nowadays to that of the past. Maybes it's just the genres I like but there is very little pre-70's music I like with the exception of a few gems and classical music. I'm heavily into neo-classical and dance music.

Just take heart that in 15 years these people liking current music. Will be in the same boat where where their "real music" went.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

I blame auto-tuning.

The OP is 19, which makes the thread even more humorous. What qualifies as good music, anything made between April and October of 2005?
