If this is true, I think I'd bite ...

I was in Target today and counting the number of PS3s, Wiis and 360s.

The tally for today - 1 360 Premium, 3 360 Elites, 0 360 Arcades, 0 Wiis, 6 40gb PS3s and 4 80gb PS3. And I see an ad for a 60gb PS3. I asked the associate about a 60gb PS3 and she said it was discontinued. Arggh. She said there were only 40gb and 80gb models. I made a slightly rude comment about the gimped 40gb PS3 and she said that Sony was going to release a 40gb PS3 with BC shortly. I was too shocked to ask her when.

If this is true, and the BC is even halfway decent, I do think Sony has a much better chance of making this next-gen gaming race much, much closer.

doubt it is true, it would piss off so many people who bought the 40GB no BC PS3.

well if Sony managed to emulate the GSX then sure.

usually employees of a company like target have no clue what they are talking about.

However, based on the recent announcement that the 40gb will eventually be the only ps3 available i think it would be smart to add bc.

I own the 60 and have since launch and i have only played a ps2 game like twice at the most. However, some people seem to think it is necessary to have bc so sony should add it. I have two ps2 and see no need for it but whatever.

I hate to be mean about it but she is store clerk. She most likely just made it up. Some of the things you hear store clerks say are so contrary to the truth you can't help but laugh.

Well I think that it may be for Europe where there is only the 40GB as the only model. In the US there is 80GB as well, and as far as I know there are no plans to discontinue it? Why would they need new hardware to do this if they have managed to emulate the GSX, thus meaning that it is entirely done by software.

Well its difficult to say ,theres a definite possibility that they can run the PS2 games solely on emulation but for that to happen they should be investing hard in retrocompatibility and they said one of the reasons of cutting the BC was to avoid this .Its possible that Sony has seen the effect of the lack of BC and started working hard on this but who knows .We will have to wait and see .

Well, I will say, based on the number of goons I see in stores, she was rather informed. She said the current models don't feature BC - and she called it both BC and backward compatiblity - but she did say the newer versions of the 40gb PS3, not the one on the shelves - and she pointed to them - would feature BC. I asked her again 'You mean those over there?' and she was like 'No, sir - the newer version of the 40gb PS3. The 40gbs out now don't feature BC, sir.'
