I had a really odd dream last night which gave me the idea for this thread. Basically I dreamt about the next Zelda game on Nintendo's next console and no it wasn't Skyward Sword. The dream was so cool and vivid that I wanted to share it with the vgchartz crowd. So in my dream, I sat down in front of my awesome floating TV and booted up this black box that has a lit up blue spiral power button. The TV flashes white and then suddenly I'm presented with a blonde boy wearing a green Tri-force t-shirt in his room. The room was very standard: a bed, desk w/ a computer, a bookshelf, and some blurry posters I couldn't really make out. At this point I'm a little confused because I had no idea what I was doing, but eventually I head for the door and the screen goes black with the sound of footsteps.
When the image returns, I'm presented with a small living room and kitchen area. There was a TV and some chairs in the living room and standard appliances in the kitchen. Seeing nothing of interest in this area I head for what appears to be the front door and once again it goes black with the sounds of a door opening, closing, and then the *thunk* of a lock. The image returns again as my character is exiting an old school elevator (it has a cage) and now I'm in a parking structure that seems to have only one vehicle left in it. The exit to the structure was a ramp so it's underground and the exit was just white light. I quickly ran up to this red vespa-like scooter when I see "Epona" in italic font on the side and it finally clicks for me. I get onto the scooter and I drive up the ramp into the light and the game quickly transitions to the world.
Hyrule is no longer the castle town we have all become accustomed to in past Zelda games. It has become a bustling metropolis with tall buildings, crowded streets, and not a single non-human character to be seen. As I'm riding around on my Epona, I'm constantly looking for something to trigger the story while also enjoying how pretty the city has become. The buildings all have this mirror-like sheen to them and there are bridges between some of the buildings at the midsection connecting them from afar. Eventually as Link is crossing under a bridge I see a bright light streak past me and I quickly turn around to chase it.
At first I thought it had vanished but every now and then I would catch glimpses of it as if it was leading me somewhere, so I kept following it. It eventually led me into a dark alleyway with a dead end, but once I turned that last corner the light had vanished again. I got Link off the scooter and ran around looking for something in the area and just when I was about to give up I heard the sound of a door unlocking. I turned Link back around to face the dead end and a shiny brass door had appeared with steam leaking out from behind it. I quickly ran to the door, opened it up, and suddenly the screen became clouded in white steam with sounds of the door slamming shut and locking.
Link's silhouette became clearer as the steam cleared and I noticed Link's outfit had changed. He was now wearing baggy grey cargo pants with big patches at the knees, a heavy green coat with pockets and straps, a green scarf around his neck, and goggles worn like a headband instead of on his eyes. The door had led me into a large factory-like site. This place had some heavy Steampunk influences with larging rotating gears and steam valves everywhere. The sounds of the gears turning and the clinks and clanks of machinery running was everywhere in this dimly lit factory.
Just as I started Link forward this robot turned the corner and charged me without any hesitation. This thing was made out of rusted metal with gears showing at it's midsection, big bulky arms, but with a tiny head and stumpy legs. It reminded me of some sort of Steampunk gorilla robot haha. Anyways, it tackled Link and suddenly three hearts appeared at the bottom of the screen with one slowly draining to half full before disappearing again. I had completely forgotten about the HUD because it had been so seamless up until I took damage. Link had no weapons or equipment on him so I just decided to run and instead of chasing me the robot started blaring its steam whistle.
The factory was a total maze and I couldn't find any doors or chests to give me clues, but suddenly I hear a "Hey! Over here!" from behind me. Don't ask me how I knew it was behind me, but when I turned Link around sure enough there's a fairy glowing brightly. She told me to follow her and she led me up a ramp, under some machinery into a secret room with a chest in the center before disappearing again. I ran up to this chest, opened it and recieved...a giant wrench complete with the classic treasure sound for good measure. So I leave the room from the tunnel I entered it from only to be greeted by two of these robot enemies at the exit.
One of the robots quickly charges me again however I managed to roll out of the way this time and it promptly smacked into the wall dazing it. As the second one was getting ready to charge me I noticed that Link was holding the wrench with two hands like a sword, so I decided to try and attack. Link performed a nice 1-2-3 combo and smacked the thing to the ground. I was then prompted to "Finish" which resulted in Link jamming the wrench into the robot's gears causing them to grind against each other unnaturally dismantling the robot's innards. However right after I finished off the first one I was hit from behind which actually caused Link to drop the wrench as he was went flying into some pipes which ruptured sending steam spewing out. The hearts reappeared at the bottom of the screen dropping me down to only half of a heart and the low health beep started up.
I kept on trying to get Link to his feet but he kept on staggering and falling as the robot started closing in for the kill. Right as the robot was standing over Link about to land the killing blow *BOOM* a Goron comes smashing down completely flattening the thing. When I saw the Goron I realized this factory must be in Death Mountain and as the Goron started to help Link to his feet...I woke up.
So I have been completely captivated by this dream and I've spent all morning thinking about how I would flesh out a Zelda game like this one. Anyways my question to you guys is, "If you were put in charge of a game for Nintendo's next console which franchise would you pick? And how would you freshen up the series?"
