A great way to freshen Pokemon up for the 3DS would be to reduce the league to the sidequest that it is, and make defeating this weeks organised crime team the dish of the day. With that as a starting point, some wittier dialouge could be penned, perhaps deeper meanings. I'd also make the battles more intense. Attack meters would be nice, like the stamina bar in Chrono Cross, perhaps make it an alternative to that annoying PP that limits your attack options between each town.
