What's worth noting in this debate is that suspicion towards everything islam has risen considerably since 9 / 11 and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, not only in Europe but the US as well.
It's extremely important for us Europeans to continue this debate, though. Without immigration most European countries will be in trouble because of our aging demographics. It is estimated that Germany needs approximately 300,000 well educated immigrants on its labor market. Putting a (partial) stop to immigration isn't going to solve this because there are no "ethnic" germans to fill this gap. So there need to be guidelines that will help to regulate immigration in a way the number of well educated immigrants can be increased.
For most people it's really just a thing about people from Turkey / Arab countries. Immigrants from western countries (especially other European countries) are generally seen in a much more positive light. Nobody wants to stop EU immigration.
It also has to be noted that people from eastern Europe (especially Roma), muslims and black people often experience discrimination in EU countries. Discrimination of eastern Europeans is hopefully going to stop over the next decades (just like it took a while for prejudices towards other western europeans to fade) but apparently it's not only the muslims who are unable to integrate, a lot of them (more than 20%) are being discriminated against at least once a year.
