Forums - General - What's up with all the japanese nerdism?

Seriously,

I see some young guys going all  crazy about japanese cartoons, which according to them "are not cartoons you smartass. IT'S ANIMÉ ! Humpfff..."

If the same cartoons are available in english or their own language, they still prefer to watch the japanese despite not understanding shit about japanese and love to read subtitles. "It's cool to watch shit on an asian language. But I need subtitles. Now excuse me I gotta watch my animé..."

They use nicknames on msn like "Jonathan-kun" ""Phillip-san" or "Amilcar Sensei"

If a cartoon is from Thailand, China, or anywhere else near that, they won't watch. It sucks because is not japanese.

They think as Japan as a nerd, carton-esque country, but they completely ignore that even inside Japan people still look at them as nerds.

Even my 23 year old virgin roommate, which is obese,  and watches japanese animé like is life depends on it.

All of a sudden, they wake up for life and stop watching and never refer about it again with any friends...

I don't get this guys...

They just like the culture, what does it matter. Dubs aren't the greatest, so I can't blame them for not liking it.

Ironically, the japanese are the same way about American culture.  The grasss is always greener.

I agree btw, I think that viewing one culture as way cooler than another is ignorant with a similar logic as saying that one culture is more effective or better than another.

If you really want to have fun, call it Japanamation.

I like watching some movies in their original language.  also i usually watch movies with their subtitles anyways, so when the dubs dont match the subtitles i prefer to go to the original language because it becomes confusing.

I admit I am huge fan of japanese anime. But most of the time I do prefer dubs over sub Ex: Full Metal ALchemist, Case Closed, DBZ. The problems with some dubs is that i guess us americans make the main charachter sound too loud or always screaming for some reason. Ex. Naruto and thats why I watch that sub. I am not completely addicted to it. I watch anime for 3 hours straight every saturday because I recently puchased dvd collections for many animes. But yeah it does make me a little curious why some people are just die hard fans of the sub. They get so extreme that if just one word is not translated right in the english dub then they want to watch sub to make sure they have the "full experience." People who watch anime online and not support companies that do these english dubs for us such as Funimation piss me off even more.

Subs > Dubs

I always like watching stuff in its original language. And besides, most of the time the English voices are just horrible, and at least with Japanese I can't notice it's quality.

But I am kinda confused by people who are overly obsessed with Japan. Honestly I'm too indifferent about the subject.

I kinda agree with an aspect of what you're talking about. It's not really a crysis though. And technically... Anime, is Animation... and "Anime" is the Japanese word for Animation (not just their own). And is all Animation Cartoons? I'm not sure. Too lazy to look up definition.

I find the -kun -san -chan -sama etc honorifics a bit weird to use, if you're not in Japan. Especially if you're not in Japan, and if you are in Japan, use it correctly >_>. For Example don't be like madonna :P

But really, it's no worse than "Gangsta" talk, imo such as "Yo Dog" etc. It's silly, at its worst and doesn't harm anyone.

Now, Watching movies, I prefer to watch films in the language the director directed it. Such as
Infernal Affairs, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, I'll watch in Chinese. Anime, barring, a few. In Japanese. French Films in french etc.

Now, it's not necessarily because I understand it... (I do understand/speak very limited Japanese... As My grandmother spoke it while I lived with her growing up). But because dubs often take away from the tone of the movie... particularly they're done badly.

Imo, even if they is pore acting in the scene that I cannot tell, it fits the original Idea of movie better than a bad dub.

Anime is so lame. Its just freaks with spiky hair 10x the size of their head. Only good one was Pokemon.

really bad generalization. that really isn't true for many anime. For Example, all of Miyazaki's basically
