@foxtail just because they never have been on them b4 does not mean they get a free pass, thats BS, they are the market leader but looking at the game library one would not think so. why wouldnt a racing game work???? last I checked devs could just have us use the classic controller or even the GC one. Gonna have to check out that skycrawlers game heard it was good, with GT5 being delayed. next month im going to give the Wii some love havent gotten a game for it in a while
@smeags PSN/LIVE have just as much 2d platformers as the Wii Limbo, LBP, BanjoKazooie, R&C, Shank, Blade Kitten, splosion. I'd say those services are just as much a haven for platform games as Wii maybe moreso and a good chunk of them came out b4 marioWii

The fact that the huge majority are DD only is testament on how developers view each console. The fact is that Wii sees a great amount of retail platformers, both 2D and 3D. Many devs see that Wii is the console for this genre, which is why we even see 3rd party exclusive Platformers like Sonic, Klonoa, A Boy and His Blob... and that's not even counting the plethora of WiiWare Platformers.
And while some games came out before NSMBW, no game had the same impact that it did. That's what I was trying to say.
Each console has its pros and cons. Platformers are one of Wii's big pros. It's not a dig at the other consoles, but I don't think they compare to Wii when it comes to this one genre. That's just me though...
@smeags i respect your decision and its cool but the fact that the HDs are DD in my opinion make it better, id rather pay 15 bucks for a good solid 2d platformer on PSN than I would pay 40 up to 50 for a game that just as good on the Wii, i dont think retail makes much difference in that regard. IMHO thats why i have a hard time messing with Wii platformers the asking price is a little steep since its 2d, it could not have been that expensive to make. NO way NSMBWii cost as much as Mario galaxy but its the same price??? thats just me though. still plan to get lost in shadow. ive played the WiiWare games, IMHO i was not impressed, I think Braid is better than any platformer on WiiWare. Mario is the Mickey Mouse of games. he'll sell no matter what. Wii is better for platformers but in the present day not by much. The HDs have really stepped up their game in this dept. this is coming from a guy who has had Wii PS3 for2 and a half years and watched the PSN improve while the whole wii structure become meh

I understand, that's cool.
Yeah, you're definitely entitled to value each game to how it'll fit your needs as a gamer, there's no problem with that. I just suppose this is a case of two guys who see these games differently, as I've played NSMBW for ~40 hours so far. So the game's definitely met its value for me, especially when I'm with three friends. ^_~
I curious, you've talked about 2D platformers, but what's your opinion on how each console fares with 3D Platformers?
@smeags there hasnt been much this gen, I think after the madness of Mario 64 went away it kinda went down. I remember when Sony and 3rd parties had a slew of me too 3d platformers, some of them were actually worth a damn. I gotta give it to Wii this time though. Xbox360 i dont even think they have a 3d platformer except for Banjo and I have not heard good things. Sony has R&C which is always good but thats about it. Ninty has Mario Galaxy which in my opinion is what Mario 64 and Sunshine should have been. Yeah def. Wii even though I play Crack in Time more than Mario Galaxy, its Wii. Im sure they have some others I dont know about
It plays the excellent GameCube library. There have only been about 6 games worth owning for the Wii. And one of those games, I can get on the HD twins. (Rock Band 2)

Yeah, the 360 definitely has a big ol' hole where 3D platforming should be, which is a shame.
PS3, like you said, has the Ratchet series, which is a solid Action-Platformer. I've always heard good things about the games. Some users here have put Uncharted 1/2 in the genre... but I think the majority agrees that the series falls into the Action-Adventure genre. Action/Adventure games can still have platforming elements people (which is why its my second favorite genre).
And like you said, Wii has the Galaxies.
And besides some smaller 3D Platformers (like Sonic, de Blob, Rabbids Go Home), that's pretty much it for all three consoles. Didn't realize the genre was that small (as far as 3D titles go anyways). Lamesauce!
@smeags maybe if the industry can get off this FPS fixation we can get on 3rd platformers. fighting games are coming back(fav gen) maybe 3d platformers can too

Amen to that. It really irks me when people say Wii has no good games, or very few. The people that say that usually mean "few blockbusters" because they seem to believe the amount of hype/advertising a game gets dicates its quality, when this is not the case at all. Wii has tons of hidden gems that despite little or no hype, are still great games: Zack and Wiki, Muramasa, De Blob, World of Goo, Lost Winds, Little King's Story, Trauma Center, Dawn of Discovery, Red Steel 2, Tiger Woods, Boom Blox, Sin and Punishment, Madworld, House of the Dead: Overkill, Resident Evil: UC, etc.. |
The Wii just can't catch a break from the "hardcore gamer" audience. Even many of the gamers who are open enough to try the more niche games on the PS3 or Xbox 360 (ie. the weeaboos) snob the Wii. A gamer doesn't have to buy a Wii if they don't want to. Just don't go spewing ignorant shit about it. If someone already has a preconceived notion about Nintendo, they're not going to bother or care about doing research on the Wii or DS or even listen when you name drop a bunch of Wii or DS titles. They're just going to assume Nintendo = kiddie = it sucks.
