N64: I think that these controllers were very easy to use and the were comfortable to hold. The problem was the analog stick would loosen up and be really hard to use. After playing Mario Kart, Mario Party, Zelda and Mario, the analog stick would barely work (especially when you played Yoshi's Story).
I never had a problem with PS controllers, although I've never played a PS3. Wii remote and nunchucks work fine for me, and Gamecube controllers are probably my favorite.
When it comes to my least favorite, The original XBOX gets my vote. Come to think of it, I don't like 360 controllers much either. Also, I hated the Gamboy advance SP. That thing was so uncomfortable to hold.

Ah, alright, that makes a lot more sense. I sold my N64 long ago. What was the point of the left side of the controller? Nintendo could have cut it off and the controller would have been the same for like every game. |
Mortal Kombat Trilogy and KI Gold. Those are just two of the ones that I played using the D-Pad, I'm sure there are others.
I don't understand all the idea of the problem with the PS controllers. People hate it because of the names triangle, etc.? That's the major gripe of the controller hate? I admit the d-pad is quite unresponsive, but not so bad you can't play games. I like the symmetrical analog sticks, but I like analog sticks not being symmetrical. I like all of the controllers despite their gripes. Maybe I'm just a conformist, but I don't think I have/will ever have a problem with a controller.
I think the PS controllers are just not very ergonomic, though not terrible. The N64 analog stick did have issues after a while which sucked.
Judging from most of what is being posted, I would say that most people's experience stems back only the past 3 gens. That being the case, you guys are really missing out on some terrible controllers...

The only real complaints I have about the PS controller are how L2 and R2 are a bit hard to reach, the pressure sensitive don't work well (and yet a lot of developers insisted on using the feature), and how there's no clear button for choosing and cancelling. With the Xbox and Gamecube it was always A+B, and with the Cube it was double clear due to different sizes, but with the PS2 it was X+O with some games, and triangle+something else with others. I know it's because of how in Japan O is correct and X is wrong, but they should've used the same everywhere. Other than that the analog sticks feel a bit loose, but that's probably just a matter of being used to the other controllers more.
There aren't really any wrong answers in a thread like this, since it's such a matter of preferences.

Well, I don't like that feature because I'm used to A, B, etc., but the biggest reason I don't like it are the divided D-Pad, that causes me major blisters. Also, the analog sticks are not precise as they're just too lose, and they are at an uncomfortable place. If at least one of them was on the main position it would be much better

If you pay closer attention, you'll see that the button names are one of several complaints. And they are pretty stupid. Whenever I describe a series of button presses to my friends, even those who never owned a SNES, I use the SNES button names, and they understand me perfectly. If I try to tell them the PS button names, they look down at the controller. It's not because of what they're used to either -- these are people who owned a PS2 and not a SNES! It's particularly annoying in games that have those silly action sequences where they pop up a message "press square!" and you have to press it quickly to avoid death.
I think it really depends on the controllers you grew up with if you feel comfortable with another one. At one hand, that is because we just prefer what we are used to, other things always mean we have to learn something more. Also, and probably a lot will not agree with me on this, I think Nintendo is always a step ahead of the concurrence in terms of controllers.
If Nintendo has done something right in their past, its the controllers. That is because Miyamoto's basic concern about a game is always: What can I do with my character, how can he move? If that is the main question for the developers, it is clear that a lot of emphasis is based on the controller.
So, Nintendo knew in the NES days that a d-pad is more useful than a joystick for 2D games.
A generation later, they knew that more buttons are needed and that a controller should fit your hand.
When they went 3D with the N64, they created a controller that put the Joystick in the main position (If you hold the controller correct, that is), while Sony put it to a secondary position and has still not changed that.
With the Gamecube, Nintendo understood that the d-pad has lost its importance and put it in a secondary position, making the controller a lot more accesible for new gamers compared to the N64's. Also, shaping the buttons differently may seem odd to people that are not used to it, but it is a great idea imo. Different to the PS, Xbox or also SNES controllers where you always had to check which button does what in a new game, you just new it with the Cube.
Now, Nintendo has changed controllers again with the Wiimote and the DS touchscreen, while Sony still sticks to their old controller after nobody liked the boomerang and Microsoft has at least adapted a lot of the things Nintendo showed them with the Cube.
If you look at the past of Controllers, you see that Nintendo was always the first to improve, the other only copied the new features Nintendo brought up. That is why people that are used to play Nintendo consoles sometimes have problems to use other controllers I think.
Has to be the TI-99/4A controller. First video games I ever played were on this POS and it wasnt fun even then, just a novelty.
