Forums - Gaming - Do we have to wait a year now to get complete versions of games?

Im one of those people who always likes to preorder games and get them first day. But it always makes me upsat when a year later even better versions of the game come out and wwith more content and a better price. Examples- Fallout 3 GOTY, Gears of War 2 GOTY, Uncharted 2 GOTY, Heavy rain move edition (I didnt buy heavy rain yet but just using it as an example).  Will this practice continue from now on?

This practice has existed for at least 20 years, PC games frequently had special releases after release that included expansions integrated into one box to boost sales a second time.  It's only because of the nature of consoles now the practice is migrating to them, DLC has allowed this practice to become a serious marketing tool.

I think your title is very badly worded though, the developer releases the complete version of games.  I would rather they used this practice for all games mind you so all DLC could be obtained for every title at a fraction of the price it is online given the inflated price in most cases.

This is the main reason I'm opting out of buyinig games I'm not 100% interested in day one because I know the "complete" version will be out in a few months.

Sometimes it's cheaper to buy the GOTY edition, even if you've got the original, than buy the DLC... I mean, I bought LittleBigPlanet brand new for £40, and didn't buy any DLC (I'm against paid DLC, I got the free stuff ofcourse), but the week after the GOTY edition came out, it was £12, so I traded my copy in and bought the GOTY, which in total cost me a whopping £6, lol... I'd say it came with more than £12 of DLC, so if anything, it was a smart move.

I did the same thing :D

The games are complete when they're being released.

But you're right they're getting even better half a year or a year later. Love this trend.

The only case where I could see a problem is if you buy a game early and don't play it for months when a GOTY edition is announced (Dragon Age in my case...). As long as you played the game and would consider buying a GOTY version, it was already worth the money. GOTY editions also usually drop much faster in price, so it's no real problem buying the same game twice, even though you're basically only paying the price of the DLC and get the game for free.

IGN gave it a 7.5 too, Actually when it comes to game reviews, IGN and Gamespot are the only two sites I would trust...

So the game is a 7.5 for me, no matter what meta score it will get in the end.

when ? who knows....

I've always thought this was a fail argument for one simple reason.

Without DLC you wouldn't get this content AT ALL and if you did the games original release date would have been pushed back much farther.

People need to stop complaining and be thankful that they even have a chance for their games to keep on living with new content whereas in the old console days once a game released it was the end of it.

Okay, you're upset about it.

What do you see as the solution?  Pushing every game's release date back a year so they can jam more content in or just not making more content for games after launch?

If you think the former is the solution then just don't buy the game at release and wait a year.  Odds are it'll be cheaper then even if there isn't a new, super improved version coming out.

If you think the latter is the solution then don't buy DLC and newer versions.  If there aren't enough people buying them, then they'll stop being made.
