Forums - General - This is how my desktop looks

I've seen this on my friends pc and I have to admit it looks very cool. Well except that mac style doc. It wasn't cool on OSX and it still isn't cool. I'd dual boot Ubuntu myself if it wasn't for the fact it hates my WiFi card.

A lot of Compiz is *WAY* beyond mac as well... Although I will admit that the video he linked makes it seem that way.

But don't think that most of the features in Compiz are available in OSX. Compiz is a fully 3-D window manager; OSX has some hacks (the good kind of hacks ) to make it look somewhat 3-D, but at heart it consists of layers of pre-rendered 2-D screens. In Compiz, each 'pixel' has a complete (x, y, z) dimension, and it uses that for its effects. For a better idea of more of what Compiz is really doing in the video above, check out the first 10 seconds of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViuJPRZh0oo

I'm running Compiz-Fusion on PCLinuxOS 2007 and it works great. On this terminal I have 1 gb ram and a Nvidia 6800GT... smooth as butter. But we also run Compiz-Fusion on most of our linux terminals at work (our company is PCLinuxOS based) and the lowest-end machine has 512MB of ram and a GeForce 4 gfx card and it runs smoothly too. Running the desktop in OpenGL really frees up the cpu from having to do a lot of unnecessary window redraws, etc.. rather, uses the GPU to handle the gfx updates (as well it should). Multitasking responsiveness is great on a Compiz desktop and the added usability of Expo and scale-windows plugins (just to name 2 of many plugins) really does help in every-day desktop usage. And the best part is.. the systems are rock solid. No problems with compiz stability, and of course, Linux is incredibly stable on its own anyway. Our company has really benefited greatly from the switch.

lol, 2 gigs here buddy. You can find some crazy deals on ram and get them really cheap.

Anyway, I've thought about trying out that OS. I've thought about partitioning a small portion of my other hard drive and installing Linux on there to check it out.

coool! Ubuntu looks ace! i may have to give it a try :P

Dude I have spare 1GB sticks of ram....and tons of 512MB and 256MB...granted I build PCs quite often and occasionally get left over parts from old builds that people don't want. But decent gaming ram is cheap right now.

Here you go leo, 2GB of DDR2 800 for $36, includes lifetime warranty. You just have to send in the $30 mail-in rebate. Hell they are even shipping it for FREE! What are you complaining about?

To Each Man, Responsibility

I'm also running Ubuntu (dual-booting with XP Pro SP2) with Gnome and Compiz Fusion.

I'm currently running Gutsy Gibbon (7.10), and I'm debating as to whether or not I should give Hardy Heron (8.04) Alpha-1 a try.

I have a geforce 2, it don't runs smothly in it without some hardwork... and it won't run with loads of stuffs enabled. my advise: It don't worth to use compiz without at least a gf4, or a gf5200.
My brother have a athlon 2500+, 512MiB ram and a geforce5200, it runs completely smoth, and almost don't use processor power (the graphic calculations are made using the VGA).

before I enter here I thought that it was a screenshot topic, so lemme show you mine desktop:

without compiz, but I just love XFCE: simple and usefull.
