Forums - General - What do you think of the weather?

Amidst the raging political debates concerning global warming and the bickering over which costs are worth it so try to salvage some of our diverse planets environments, I've noticed changes.

They were slow at first, but now I don't recognize my own home region's climate anymore. I live just 30 kilometres south of the polar circle, and my region (middle Norway, Trøndelag) is known for it's harsh winters and wet summers.

But in later years this has changed, from 1997 until 2007, 7 of the hottest summers ever recorded in this region have been measured, which is suspicious to say the least! Our spring and fall is so rainy that farmers loose their livelihood as mud doesn't fetch good prices on the market these days. This area I live in has been declared a catastrophic zone for aggriculture now, and nothing can be counted on or predicted anymore. And the winter? We've had about 0 degrees celsius now since september, and the snow won't stick, it rains away leaving a bare christmas  like the two previous holiday seasons.

When I was a boy of 10-12, we played out in over 3-4' of snow, but now it barely reaches 10" before it melts or rains away. One of my friends went to Canada this summer to see his girlfriend, and they told of similar conditions, especially bothersome were a type of beetle that ate pinewood that simply did not die in wintertime anymore because of high temperatures!

I'm worried, quite frankly, am I the only one sensing these changes? How's your country/region compared to before?

You really can't extrapolate a warming trend based on the observation that winters seem milder than when you were a kid, or that you had a record hot summer this year. This is called anecdotal evidence.

There are, of course, much wider bodies of evidence and sound reasoning that do back a warming trend.  Just trying to put this into perspective.

IT SUCKS!!

ITS 82 DEGREES AND ITS HUMID AS HELL!!!

I HATE IT!!!!!!

I do not and will never believe in global warming, when you get people like Al Gore making presentations and videos to save the environment and encouraging us to save more energy and then turns around and himself uses 10x more energy than average American home.

If Al Gore would really be doing this to save the environment he would not be accepting awards for his videos and would not be keeping millions of dollars for himself. If I were him and I would be truly trying to save the environment I would not accept money and awards.

Here in Manitoba, Canada, we did have a nice summer where temperatures reached 38 *C (100,4*F) but now, they are predicting the coldest winter in 15 years for us where we will reach -50*C (-58*F) no problem.

Don't get me wrong I do believe we pollute too much and that something should be done about it, but promoting the end of the world through global warming is not the answer.

I'm in Canada, and except for mud crops, we're in the same boat.  Record breaking hot temperatures are becoming the norm.  This winter looks like it'll be a cold one, but last year we didn't see snow in southern Ontario until mid-January.

Unfortunately, I've always maintained 'global warming' is a hard sell in Canada. People here will give it a lot of lip service but won't give up a damn thing to stop it.  And who in Canada wouldn't prefer warmer winters?  More land to use for farming (as the permifrost melts away)?  Longer summers?

Do we care if Leo-J is frying to death while we enjoy nice weather? Nah.  Come visit us in the "Great White Green North" Leo...

Global Warming, from an environmentalist 'fundie' perspective is, at best, laughable.

Trying to shove crazy junk down people's throats, arguing it's going to be the end of the world in 50 years is dumb. What's even worse is the following global depression that would/will take place if every one of their whims was met.

Being "environmentally friendly" is a very, very costly business. The huge problem is they propose radical changes along their belief set, and not sound advice to make the environment better. None of them understand economics.

I'm all for energy conservation, and promoting products that are renewable, and help remove individual countrie's dependance on various energy products (ie, US needing so much oil from everyone else).

Ultimately, what matters is improving the environment from a standpoint of being sound economically. If you impose massive cost-inducing changes to US, European, and Japanese economies, you'll send them into recession, while the developing countries get a free pass on environment standards.

It takes unilateral acknowledgement of improving various efficency standards, recycling, and other things that won't kill industries, or economies, but things that get consumers to think smarter (not more expensive), and industry to put out better quality products.

Hopefully the US decides enough is enough soon, and change to more biofuels like hemp and sorgum-based ethanols, and biodiesels. That's alot of bad environment crap there.

Also, killing the 1 billion sacred cows in India off would be another great start. They produce most of the methane in the world.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I live in the UK and love our seasons and our ever changing weather and can't understand why people stop doing things things just because of a bit of rain.

If you don't like it get off your arse and move somewhere else but at least stop moaning about it.
