PlayStation 4 'May Not Succeed,' Says Pachter

Videogame download service OnLive could halt the success of the next generation of consoles if it can deliver a similar experience to that offered by the Move and Kinect devices, claims Michael Pachter.

OnLive currently allows gamers to access well known hit titles such as Assassin’s Creed II for $39.99 (£25.51) for unlimited play to a three-day pass on Batman: Arkham Asylum for $4.99 (£3.18).

Asked whether the service can compete with the next generation of consoles from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo in four or five years time the Wedbush Morgan analyst told IncGamers: “I'm not sure where OnLive will be by then.  If they can deliver a similar 3D/virtual reality experience (to Move and Kinect), we may not see new consoles succeed.”

I totally disagree!

Many big franchises like GT, FF, MGS, Mario, Zelda, Wii Brand, Halo, RE and what not won't ever be on OnLive!

Its too soon for onlive to overthrow regular home consoles. Onlive might do well but it won't completely replace standard home consoles.

There are lots of things which don't make this possible right now, but if this gen goes till 2013 who knows what can happen. MS or Sony may get behind this and provide support for it...

Personally I like the idea, consoles can go screw themselves for all I care.

But internet speed and bandwith limit, as well as controller lag make me a little sceptical.

I think it could happen depending on the time it takes for the new gen of consoles as well as the control scheme.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

darth, you already made the main argument against Pachter's statement: the games.

What OnLive could be in the best case scenario is a platform that has all big third party games on offer and supports all kinds of different control options, but it can't get a hold of any first party software of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. In this scenario only the console manufacturers who don't dominate the top of the million sellers list of their systems could run into serious problems. Since Pachter didn't mention Nintendo in his response, it seems that even he has that much common sense.

Pachter said, "we may not see new consoles succeed.”

So no he didn't mention Nintendo specifically, but he didn't mention SONY or MS either. We can assume he meant all 3.

Onlive will halt console gaming just like gamefly killed the rental/sales market.

A few things.

1) they are the same price as buying when you buy the "full play pass" so there are no savings. The rental could save you money if you were a hardcore gamer who finishes games in 2-3 days (so maybe 1% of the gaming populace) You also don't have to buy high end PC's to keep up with the latest games (which play on lower power PCs from the last few years anyways), but the PC market isn't the largest anyways, and people like consoles (in general)

2) any true hardcore gamer will have a super power PC rig. This isn't a console replacement, it is a PC replacement. At this point, they might as well use steam and save money which will fund parts for their super powerful PC

I'm not saying it can't succeed, but it needs to significantly differentiate itself or it needs to be significant savings. It is doing neither of these two things.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

I think it is far more likely that Nintendo (or Sony or Microsoft) will do something unexpected with their next console that creates interest that onlive will never have ... With that said, with Pachter's track record of picking consoles before release I would personally suggest that you bet heavily on the opposite of whatever he says

I voted for the first one but then I realized it said "crock" and not "cock". How do I change my vote?

MM onlive is only in US i think.... how do you want to get a console market, when is much bigger than just US... this doesnt make any sense, i dont see them bringing onlive to everywhere over the planet... and you really cant just use the servers from another country or u will get insane delay..
